turn signals / brake lights
turn signals / brake lights
I bought a 1994 Ram 2500 (diesel) recently and it has problems with the signals and brake lights. The lights on the right side of the truck worked when I bought it, but on the left they didn't. Now the turn signals and brake lights have stopped working on both sides, and the "hazard" fuse is blown.
I did a search and found out the Dodges have problems with a multifunction switch in the steering column. Could a bad multiswitch explain my truck's symptoms?

It may be the multi-switch, but it could be some grounds gone bad.
Take some time with a voltmeter.
Also check to make sure the CHMSL (center High Mounted Stop Light) is working, or getting voltage.
In My Opinion I would say that it probably isn't the Multi-Switch going bad if the brake lights, AND turn signals don't work.
When you pull back on the switch does it go from high beam to low beam? Do the windshield wipers work?
Just a few things to look at.

I used the Haynes Manual testing procedure for the multiswitch and it tests good.
However, a little testing at the wiring harness connector for the multiswitch shows that wire 16 grounded out somewhere in the chassis, which probably explains the turn signal problem. First find that fault and repair it; then see what ails the brake lights. The Center High Mounted brake light works, but not the ones in the tail.
