Truck Weight/GCWR

Diesel Gods,
I weighed my truck the other day and it's at 6920lbs with a full tank and me in it. Meaning it was 1000lbs heavier than I thought. Which means I can't tow as much as I thought. > My window sticker says I can pull up to 9450 lbs trailer weight. That seems low to me, even though I only have the 3.55 axle and a 16,000 Gross Combined Weight Rating. Does that sound right? Thanks. 8)

Re:Truck Weight/GCWR

Jones0027, your numbers sound about right. So if you take the 16K GCWR, and subtract the truck weight of 6920, that leaves available tow weight of 9080 lbs. The motor will pull more than that, but the other components such as transmission, shocks, brakes, etc. are designed for the rated load plus a little safety factor. The other part of the equation will be the hitch weight and whether or not it exceeds the axle weight rating for your rear axle when added to the weight currently sitting on your rear axle (when the trailer is loaded as it would be for a trip somewhere). HTH.

My 01, 2500, Quad Cab, 4x4 can pull 18,000 lbs with no problem. I don't know what my truck weights but, it pulls like a dream I wouldn't worry about it to much just make sure you have trailor brakes.

Re:Truck Weight/GCWR

As GrandpasRam said.

If what you are pulling is actually 9450# you'll only be 370# over the GCWR. The built in safety factor is much higher than that - nothing to worry about; that 370# extra will not harm the tranny, axels, brakes nor trailer hitch - and nothing hurts the CTD!! ;D ;D

Your truck weight is right on. Mine is 7,000# with me in it. Everyone I know with a 2nd Gen. is around the 7000# mark, unless they have extras such as a heavy brush guard, roll bars etc.

Hook up and pull. Have a Grrrreeeaaaattt Day

I pull a 14K 5th wheel with my 2500 24V 4X2 modified with an Edge comp and DTT tranny. No problems for me even though makes me close to 20K on the road.

Re:Truck Weight/GCWR

Jones0027,
Get it loaded and head for the nearest CAT scale. Pull onto the scale where you will have only one set of axles on each pad. That will tell exactly what your weights are, steer axle, drive axle, trailer axle and combined or gross.

Re:Truck Weight/GCWR

I did all the weights per the rv owner's manual (5 separate weighings) but since then I have added a 175 pound generator and a few other things that have shifted some of the weights around. I need to do it again. Original weighings were with all tanks full which I don't usually have and that added some 800 pounds to gross weight.

Re:Truck Weight/GCWR

My '96, 4x4, 5 spd, ext cab, long bed, only weighs in at 6760 with me in it (2 different scales and about the same number). I never knew the 24 valve/quad cabbers were that much heavier!! ???

Re:Truck Weight/GCWR

I have the same truck with training wheels. With me ( 170 ) and a full tank of fuel I scaled at 7400. Figure extra tires and wheels, a little heavier axles on mine and it sounds right. Thats a full 1K heavier than 96 F250 7.5L 4x4 . That leaves me with only 8600LBS of trailer capacity.

Re:Truck Weight/GCWR

I scale at 7150 with 1/4 tank of fuel, but I have a heavy tool box, high lift jack, spray in bedliner, nerf bars, grill guard, bed rails, headache rack, and stereo components. What is interesting is how many people are driving around in CTDs in IN that are illegal. They have 7000 lb plates on trucks that are over 7000 lbs with no "load" or passengers

Re:Truck Weight/GCWR

I think our trucks are like we are. The older they get the more they weigh Mine is a regular cab 3500 4x4 ETH/DEE and the Cat scale showed that I weighed (best I can remember) around 7000 lbs with me and a full tank of diesel.

My 2wd truck was weighed by the previous owner at 6540lbs (6.54 kip for the engineers ). That was with a shell and running boards, which are no longer on there. The heaviest I have had my truck weighed at was 4.9 tons or 9800lb, with the bed nearly full of dirt. This is 1000lb over the GVWR, but I did not exceed my tires' or axle weight rating.
