Question Transfer case chain adjustment

I opened up my transfer case today to reseal the leaking cases and I noticed that the chain was pretty loose.
How tight is the chain supposed to be? Is it adjustable or do you need to replace the chain if it is loose?

Also what is the snap ring on the output shaft supposed to look like? Mine was just a ring of steel without any holes for snap ring pliers (like the silencer ring snap ring only bigger). What a pain to remove / replace. Is this what is normally in there?

Thanks!
