Do you have a cold front shield? I hear they can cause incorrect readings.

Not sure where yours is located because of the year but mine is right behind the grill in front of the radiator. Thats why cold fronts affect them, by making the air warmer where the sensor is. Maybe yours is dirty?

Could be, Im afraid of what it might be, I got the truck from the parents and they let me in on the secret that when it hit the deer it broke the first sensor. So when the great mechanic that replaced it, he just just the old one off and spliced a new one into the wireing. so i pry ahve some bad voltages there. Anyone use the Craftsman Multimeters? are they any good? Just askin for school actually. Im on strick budget. These things are like 50 bucks and for some reason they want me to buy this fluke meter, which im sure its better but i dont have 2-3 hundred to drop into one now haha.

My memory is not 100% on this, but the ambient temp sensor is located on the right radiator support (facing the truck), or in your case possibly in the center behind the grille. On your multimeter Q, for basic automotive electrical the Craftman meter should do nicely. Also Beckman makes a nice affordable meter.

The sensor on your '97 is a little to the center from being right behind the driver's side headlight. Check/clean the connection there.
