In tank pump conversion?

Was thinking about changing the fuel level sending unit because my gauge is finicky. Looking around I’m seeing the whole module with the pump but many say for models already converted to in tank pump. Is there a way to know if my truck has been converted without dropping the tank? Kinda wanted to just drop it once to replace it. I know I still have the lift pump on the side of the engine. Does the in tank module work along with the lift pump? Also if you’ve gone through this before what module did you use to replace and has it been reliable for you? I came across a brand called Spectra Premium that might seem ok, at least it’s Canadian and not Chinese. Many thanks

Tricky.... if a dealer did the mod he should have removed the engine mounted lift pump, but chances are good that somebody else did it and did not bother.

A sure fire way to find out is to count the wires going to the tank -3 or less wires into one connector- only fuel level. More than that are needed for the in tank pump.

The dealer kit did include a wiring harness running from the stock lift pump plug to the fuel tank- so if you have wires going that way you'll know.

At least over here in tank modules with a gasser pump were sold as for the diesel, the results were disappointing.

That's good advice from Alpine. My intank pump-done under warranty when my ecm went out around 67K miles, gave a miserable 8-10 psi after I got my fuel pressure gauge installed so I dropped the tank, pulled it and installed a 95 GPH FASS. This pump is way more than I need for sufficient fuel pressure. I set it at 18 psi and haven't touched it since. It is a bit noisy since I mounted it to a bed rail, I'll isolate it better someday when I have the time, but for now it has been running strong for probably ten years.

PS I sourced a used original style pick up and sender from a member here and replaced the gasket...
