Has this happened to anyone else? The last couple of times it has gotten really cold (+20 or so) my speedometer guage has not functioned until I tapped on the faceplate. Is is just getting stuck or is this the beginning of a real problem that I need to take care of?

Tapping on the face plate to make it work would tell me that the needle is getting gumed up and sticking. Think it's time for a new speedo. You may be able to take it apart and clean it up, then put a drop of "super lube" on it.
