steering wheel knocking

just wondering if anybody had similar steering wheel noises on a second gen. mines an 02. a knocking sort of sound that can be felt in the wheel mainly at low speed turning.lubed steering column u joints, and was able to wiggle the column enough to suspect column problems?out of warranty and no time. so i would guess it would be a pretty spendy show at the shop?

Check the play in the steering box. Mine has a small pop that you can here from underneath the truck. You can try to adjust the worm gear or you can buy a reman unit from NAPA. I think I heard its about $240 from there.

Low speed clunk when turning the wheel, heh? I'd suspect the I-shaft has a bit of play in it and is binding on one of the flats. The body flexes causing the I-shaft to move just slightly. They had a similar problem in early 2nd gens. Some lash is OK say maybe .010 - .015" on the shaft after that it's worn out. FWIW, The original manufacturer sells them to DCX for a fraction of what the dealer charges.
