Steering issue

I just bought a 95 regular cab dodge. The steering wheel has play in it in the column, mostly right at the top. The wheel can be moved up and down. It has tilt, but that is not what is moving. What would be the best way to fix this, it basicly feels like a bearing, or shim has worn out in there and needs replaced. Get a good junkyard column and put in, or try to find the parts to fix what I have?

Any and all help would be great thanks

from what you describe sounds like the problem mine had when i bought it, looks like the wheel is moving but it is the entire front of the column

take the column covers off and you will see that one of the pivot pins for the tilt has walked out, just knock it back in and it will be fine

I was sure hoping it would be the whole tilt steering moving, but it is just the steering wheel and top of the shaft. Forgot to put that in there, I took the covers off and it appears that the top bearing is shot, plus all the lil metal ***** on the floor under it. I am pretty sure that is the problem. Just for kicks, called the Dodge dealer to see what they said, 1700 bucks for new steering column, that is not the cheapest way to go for sure. Was hoping that someone had put the bearings in one, or knew if that was even possible. Have been told it isn't by local shops.

I hit the local u pull it yard over the weekend, all the ones I found that were an improvement were out of newer trucks. I wasn't sure if the newer stuff would work or not, so didn't spend the money to get one.

Ask the guy that sells the bushing about steering columns. He knows them in detail. You'll likely get better information on how to check and repair & what vehicles have columns that fit.

You'll have to track him down. Sorry, I don't have a link. You may as well buy & install the bushing while the column is out of the truck.

I think I know what he is talking about....There is a bushing kit sold for $60...I installed one in my colume and it sure gets rid of some of the kick back driving over speed bumps..
