Steering gear Leak, Whats involved in changeing Adjuster plug seal
Any one know if I can do this with the gearbox mounted in the car? Is it right behind the lock nut or do I have to take out the thrust bearing?
hi
you can change it easily if you remove the box , which is easier than it looks !
remove the 1 bolt that hllds the stear shaft on and it slides off !
remove the bolts holding the sway bar brackets and let it swing down out of the way !
disconect the stearing rod from the pitman arm !
disconnect the supply power stear hose at fuse box and plug both ends to keep out dirt .
disconnect the return line and plug both ends ,fluid will want to drain from pump resavior !
remove three mounting bolts and box will drop right out . 30 min max !
unscrew the lock collar unscrew the adjuster collar to replace seal .
grab the inner collar / bearing thing with needle nose and pull it out and replace the o ring .
put it back together and tighten the collar till no play and back off 3/8 " install lock ring making sure adjustment does not move = done !!
i would also set the sector shaft adj at this time , same thing remove all play back off 1/3 of a turn tighten lock nut making sure screw does not turn !
did mine last mounth and truck drives like a dream !
ps , stearing box should be centered when you startremoval and when adj are made !

Well I replaced all the Orings and seals in the gearbox and it took me way to long to get it done, I saw the seal that went bad so hopefully now my problem is fixed. Also when I was adjusting the shaft and backed off 1/3 of a turn it seemed to tight so I went 2/3 of a turn, Could to lose of an adjustment end up causeing a problem?
hi
are you working on the stearing box or the pump , confused by your reply ?
if the adj is too loose you will just have sloppy stearing ! you can adj it if needed while it is in the truck if needed !
