smashed dash
smashed dash
Greetings,
I just bought the 2000 2500 CTD that you guys counseled me on earlier this week. (Thanks for that.) It is the one that has 223,000 miles on it. I got it for $9500. I'm sure I will have a thousand more questions as I get into it, but right now the thing that has my attention is that the the plastic on top of the dash is shattered into about ten pieces. So I need to replace it. Any tips?

Bob, I bought an 01 2500 about 2mos ago (60K miles). Prior to buying I too did research and noticed a problem with dash boards. Fortunately for me, the previous owner had replaced his dash and went further to buy dash cover. I suspect its a very wise thing to do. I've heard the aftermarket replacement dashes are better quality...for some reason the originals were made/designed cheaply. ...my 2cents --Dan in TX
The dashboards on these trucks are pieces of junk. Replacing your dash will cost you a bundle. I found the greatest alternative is this:

It's a hard polycarbonate dash cover molded to fit your dash. You simply glue it on top of your old dash (after you clean and sand it a bit). I feel this is the only true alternative to a broken or severely cracked dash since it is hard plastic. I left mine black and it looks great with the gray interior. It fits perfectly and is worth every penny.

Those poly dash covers don't fit very well. Plus, as the dash falls apart, there's nothing to glue it to. I replaced mine for less the $200. About $169 if I recall. It's about a 5 hour project for two people and a six pack. Make sure you save your vin tag. It's mounted to the part you replace. Search on this subject here. Instructions to change it have been spelled out several times.
