Sell or Hang onto '99 QC 4X4???
Sell or Hang onto '99 QC 4X4???
I just needed some opinions from the experts on whether it would be better for me to sell or keep my truck since I no longer have anything to haul since I have now sold my camper. Seems like a big waste driving this truck as a car back and forth from work every day (35 miles a day one way) when I could get away with driving a cheap little truck or car. I already have 95K on the truck and am afraid that once I cross the magical 100k barrier all hopes of a fruitful resale will be pointless even though the Cummins is hardly broke in at this point. Be warned that I am a beancounter by trade and regrettably I think accordingly..Anyway, here are the facts for you to consider:

I love the truck - by far the best vehicle I have ever owned.
Still owe quite a bit on it, bought it used and will lose quite a bit when and if I sell. I bought it 18 months ago for 22,500 (24,400 tax and all) and figure it's worth about 18,500 or so now given the mileage even though it is super clean and has never had any problems. Totally stock, Michelins w/ less than 7k on them, step bars, and has every option except leather pretty much. Always maintained and kept immaculate. Am worried that one day I will have to replace trans or the lift pump or even worse the injection pump. This and the additional cost of oil changes and tire replacements and such, should I bale now or hang in there for the long run?? Also, not having the monthly payment would be nice as well but losing that amount of money for about 18 months of use seems unwise regardless of if I actually need the truck or not. Thanks in advance!

In my opinion, it all comes down to what is fun for you to drive. I have a one ton that I use as my everyday driver. I have never hauled a thing with it. My plan is to eventually use it for horse trailers, but that's several years off. And I bought it knowing full well that any type of hauling was several years away. Still, I would never even consider selling it.
And I get better mileage than my dad's Dakota... so it's not TOO uneconomical ;D

Being a bean counter, that would be reason number one to hold on to it, at least for a couple years, let the depreciation catch up with itself.
Sure, wear and tear costs will happen, but they will happen on any vehicle.
Oil changes, tires, brakes, etc are unavoidable unless you do public transportation.
There are less moving parts to wear and tear on the cummins than your average gas engine.
You might need a strong pulling pickup again.
If you do decide to sell, you shouldn't have a problem selling it, when I was looking I couldn't find a used one anywhere, they are grabbed up as soon as the hit the lots.
I'd even say someone here might be willing to take it off your hands

For what ever my oppinion is worth, Id hang on to it.

If for nothing else, to allow the depreciation to level out and allow you to relook at selling the truck when you can turn a profit.
However, what the truck currently offeres you is three fold:
1) The potential to haul/pull in the future.
2) You said this yourself:

3) This a good quality truck. As long as you take care of it, (Yes, this will cost you in terms of oil changes, tires, etc), the truck will take good care of you for many more miles.

The decision is yours, but I'd probably keep the truck.

Rich.
by far the best vehicle I have ever owned.
Re:Sell or Hang onto '99 QC 4X4???
Thanks for all of your input, thats gives me alot to think about. True, I may need a real truck from time to time and when you think about it, the gas mileage is comparable to say a Toyota V6 4x4! Here's a question though, when and if the trans decides to go south, do you rebuild using a regular trans shop or do you go ahead and upgrade with say a DTT or ATS trans? Seems to me that if you just had a local trans shop rebuild it, you would be in the same shape again in time. But on the other hand, would a DTT trans would last a lifetime?? Is it worth the additional money to go ahead and do the total upgrade versus the simple rebuild w/ factory parts?? ???

In my opinoin, you should hang on to it a while. Not only will you lose money, about $5900 if you use your numbers, plus the cost of a new everyday runner, plus tax and reg fees. plus the ramifications of buying a used vehicle. On the other side of the coin, you may sell yours, find a nice economical vehicle for general transportation, and not come out all that much behind.
Re:Sell or Hang onto '99 QC 4X4???
Yes the trans upgrade is worth the money, because the shops that do them not only use severe duty parts to upgrade, they make their own torque converters to go with them so they will last. ;D

The '94-'02 Rams are already beginning to rise in value, largely as a favored specialty vehicle, now that the new models are out. A friend of mine's a rare auto broker -- he says the '94-'02 CTD's are a great bet to become "classic" values in 7-10 years -- in part because people like the way they look, in part because of the Cummins, and in part because the model redefined pick-up trucks in a big way.

Nice thing about the Cummins is that most of these CTD's will still be around in 7 to 10 years.

GP

I'll tell you right now you won't save that much! I got rid of my Chevy and bought a 99 Camry. My insurance went up almost $200 every 6 months. The car was probably $10,000 less new than the truck! They said a truck is safer than a car, is why the car was higher. Want to but a '99 Camry? Has a sun roof and gets 30mpg! I'll put new tires on, 61,000 miles.
Re:Sell or Hang onto '99 QC 4X4???
After seeing the difference it collision damage between my truck and the Explorer that hit me, there is no way I would trade it for a car. I value my safety too much.
In fact, my daughter will start driving next year. I was thinking of getting a used VW diesel for her to drive. Not now. Now I think I'll look for a nice used regular cab 2500 with the CTD.
FWIW, I get about the same mileage with my truck as I did with the Corsica I had a few years back. Also, my insurance went down when I got the truck.

Re:Sell or Hang onto '99 QC 4X4???
I'd keep it. Yea it might seem like a high cost for maintance, but in the long run, you'll be on top. I think if you sell it, your going to wish you did not in a year or less. Just my .02 worth.
Big dawg
