Is it necessary to remove the axles? Is there no external adjustment? I was told it is a 7 hour project Am I being scammed? Doc

I have an 01 which should be the same. Assuming you already removed the calipers, pull the axles, it's not difficult, just remove the bolts and coax them straight out. You'll need a special socket for the large nut in the wheel. I can't remember the size but I believe AutoZone has it. Don't loose the nut keeper. Pull the wheels. That is it. You're now into the parking brake pads. You can reuse the metal gasket on the axles. Lining up thele to put them back in I think is the hardest part of the job.

Is that the same process on an 2007? My parking break is really weak and have a heck of a time just keeping the truck still on the smallest of angle. I usually just keep it in gear when i'm not inside the truck.

You adjust them thru the same style access hole as drums, one is on top and the other is on the bottom of the backing plates. Remove the rubber plug and turn the starwheels down IIRC.
An 01.5-02 with rear discs does not need the axles removed to pull the calipers.
I estimate 2-3 hours at a leisurely pace. I did mine in 1.5 last time.
