Redhead steering box and SS steering stabilizer
Redhead steering box and SS steering stabilizer
Anyone had issues getting their Darin's/Solid Steel steering stabilizer to fit with a Redhead steering box? I've had the stabilizer for years and just installed a new Redhead box tonight. When putting the brace back on, the pitman arm nut with the shaft that goes through the bearing isn't centered up in the hole. The hex portion is actually touching the edge of the hole.
Since these are just reworked OEM boxes, I figured they would work together.

I pulled it off, cleaned all the mounting surfaces and put everything back on. It still wasn't perfectly centered, but it wasn't making contact. I bolted it down tight and ran the steering to the stops and made sure there was no contact. Then I bolted up the bearing and it fit. No extra drag on anything as I was cycling the steering with the engine off.
Not sure why it was so far off the first time, but it looks like it all works out. That box is SO much nicer than the worn out stocker that was on there. It no longer feels like I'm driving a little boat on rough seas.
