Rear End Growl

Hello,

My 2001 2500 recently started making a weird noise when turning at low speeds. It sounded like it is in the rear. It seems to only happen when turning left. I checked the rear fluid and it was 1/2 inch below the fill hole and pretty foamy. Truck has 150,000 on original fluid, at least I think. I have put the last 100k on it anyway. Rear bearing, U-Joint, Carrier Bearing?

Any ideas would help.

Thanks

Cole

150,000 on original fluid? I think you got your moneys worth out of it. Personally, I would drop the diff cover, clean everything up, and put in new fluid with additive (do a search on what type and how much). Then put it all back together and see what happens.

It sounds like the cluches are no longer liking that old fluid. New fluid may make them happy again.

Definatly drop the cover if there are no chunks I would clean a refill. If you have a Limited-slip that is probably where the noise is coming from.

If the howling sound is louder under coasting situations and goes away after 30 or so mph it's probably your pinion bearing. Mine goes in Monday. I'll post the results.

Wow..! yur done dude. I changed mine at the suggested service interval and it was already getting nasty.

If you check out the rear end and it checks ok, I'd check the bearings.

Still can't believe... 150k... Change that lube man

I just chased my tail with the same noise...
Guess what it was the drive shaft carrier bearing.
Put it up on jack stands and rotate the tires and see if the noise is comming from the carrier bearing.
I did the same thing change the fluid and everything. The carrier bearing was bad and cost $60for a new one.

scottsjeeprolet, post the info or start a new topic on the carrier bearing! I think mine is telling me it's time to be replaced.

What kind of sounds or warnings did it give you?

Where did you get the bearing, part number, and how much?

Any words of wisdom for the R?R?

Thanks, Kevin

I posted this info in my problem thread but here it is.
I kept hearing a constant growling noise from the rear even when coasting in neutral.
put it on the lift and turned the tires and narrowed it down to the drive shaft carrier bearing. not too hard to replace the Spicer pn is 211963-1X about $60 from my local driveline guy and for you in the Baltimore area that is Perry Hall Power Equipment. He is a certified Spicer rear end guy. Will build you anything you want.
good luck

Is the carrier bearing the same as the pinion bearing? And did you have to pull the carrier out to replace it? Thanks

No there are two carrier bearings and they are in the rear, the carrier (often called the differential) has the ring-gear attached to it and is turned by the pinion. The Drive shaft carrier bearing supports the two piece driveshaft that goes from the T-case to the rear yoke ( @ the rear )that is attached to the pinion by a big nut.
If your pinion bearing has gone out it is best to leave the job to a professional or someone who has extensive knowledge in setting up rears.
I only set up my own rears.
hope you find your problem, if you lived near me i would tell you to bring it over so we could find the problem.
good luck

Scott, had all the bearing in the rear diff replaced today. NO MORE HOWL . Carrier Bearings were scorched, pinion bearings were sloppy, and the shims were incorrect. Had the universal done while he was in there. 630 later but with 115,000 it was time. Thanks for your input. Piece of mind is priceless

Glad to hear you are up and running again, Too bad your wallet had to take such a big hit though that sucks, you could have had a Smarty for that price. Pay to play.
Did they give you any idea of what happened? Low diff fluid level or just wear and tear?

I bought the truck with 38,000 on her already back in 2000 and changed over to synthetic around 40m, The fella that did the work thought said the shims were incorrect and the back lash was out of tolerance. Might have been sloppy from the Factory. Oh and I bought the SMARTY before I had the work done . Yeah my priorities are a little mixed up
