rear brakes locking up---the sequel!!
rear brakes locking up---the sequel!!
There was a post about this awhile ago but i couldnt find it. Ive replaced my brakes in the rear along with new hard ware and new wheel cylinders (chevy) and i am still gettuing the dreaded wheel lock when i first drive my truck. If im doing over 20 mph or if ride the brakes over 20 mph then it doesnt happen but if i just get in, and drive to the nearest stop sign or whatever, then when i just barely touch the pedal, I slide to a stop. There was an idea about brake lines that was floating around and I just wanted to know if anyone has gotten the time to do this, and if it worked?
HAPPY HOLLOWEEN !!!!
HAPPY HOLLOWEEN !!!!
Just had a thought, are the shoes installed correctly? I know i have done it in the past were i got them mixed up,the old not paying attention disorder kicks in, long one were the short one should be or even two of each on each side.
thats what I thought before, the proportioning valve, but then some one chimed in about the rubber brake lines expanding and fluctuating the pressure. I figured though some one on here should have went through this problem before and im hoping they are willing to share. My first plan would be to rebuild the entire brake system, but for most of us anyway, we need the truck (and all that money) everyday for bills. The hunt continues!!! thanks for the replies everyone! keep em coming
Is the lock-up only happening in the first few stops of the day and has it been humid/rainy lately?
If so it's normal, the brake drums flash rust when parked overnight and will grab till the rust is worn off. People who live on the coast have even more of a problem with this.
Best bet is to just realize this happens and drag the brakes first thing to clean off the drums before getting in a situation where you depend on the brakes.

Mine will rust a tad and grab on the first push of the pedal as I back down my long driveway. It catches me every now and then if I haven't driven the truck in a day or two.
It go's away as soon as I apply the brakes enough to wipe the drums clean
Thats the ONLY time it does it.

This is *exactly* what happens on my Suburban (3/4T) in wet weather... one good stop seems to fix it, but if I forget the first touch can quickly remind me!

mx, every dodge i have owned has done this. but it only does it after wet, foggy or humid conditions. doesnt take long to get rid of it, i just gentily ride the brakes for 100 yards or so. it doesnt hurt anything riding the brakes for this long as it builds up a little heat in the front pads as well and makes stopping power better right away. must be a wisconsin thing, i am inbetween milw. and madison
p.s. the rubber brake lines wil not expand under the little pressures given at a normal unloaded stop, i have used rubber lines on race cars under exterme pressures without problems in the past. and if it is expanding you will actually lose braking force due to more volume being filled and less pressure getting to the wheel cylinders
