Radio and front speakers
Radio and front speakers
Since I have owned the 98 the front speakers haven't worked. I am going to install a new Pioneer DEH-2200UB and would like for the front speakers and even the tweeters to work if that isn't asking much of the 98.
I was reading in the FSM about the radio choke/ speaker relay.
It stated that if there is no sound output from front and / or tweeters that the relay should be checked? I have the plug for the radio choke, but nothing to plug it into.
Can I get the front speakers and tweeters to work without this radio choke?

If you are planning on a new head unit, rather than messing with the screwy Infinity system, I'd just go ahead and get some new aftermarket speakers and some speaker wire. Run the speaker wire straight from the HU to the speakers.
That's what I have been hearing. I guess the amps will unbolt from the OEM speakers and I can get some slim profile 6X9 that will fit in the space. I have also read that the OEM AMPLIFIED speakers really aren't all that great anyway. Besides, given the track record of the infinity system, the odds are the speakers and/or amplifiers are blown.
Any ideas which speakers will fit the space in the door? I have been told it has limited depth...

Go to crutchfield.com and they will get you pointed in the right direction. From what I have read, 6X9 are not as popular as they used to be. They are recommending for our trucks using 5 1/4 to 6 1/2 with an adapter (they give you for free) to fit in the factory location. The 6X9's they do have are not manufacturers that I have heard of before so that is why I am leaning towards the 6 1/2's. Hope this helps.

I always use Crutchfield as well, as they supply the adapter harness and mount plate for whatever youre installing, so it's plug in and go with minimal soldering. When I did the head unit on my 98, I also installed Polk 6.5" components in the front doors. The adapter for the 6.5" was easy to make, and the tweeters replaced the ones in the A pillar easily. They also supplied a plug to go from the factory speaker connection in the door to the component crossover. When I saw the factory Infinity speakers, I was shocked that Infinity ever put their name on them. They really look cheap, and mine were totally shot.
