Purchasing Advice

I am thinking about purchasing a 2000 2500 QC, (loaded - Sport) but this would be my first Dodge and would like advice. I was at the local dealer and the truck had just been traded in an hour before. No cleaning was done so I got to see it in "raw" shape. There was an oil leak coming from a hose in the front of the engine, the A/C was not working and there was evidence of trans fluid leaking from the rear seal. Truck seemed to run great and has only 43000 miles. What should I put into my offer to the dealer as far as repairs, etc.? All advice is welcome. They are going to be asking $23,000 and I was thinking about offering $20,500. Thanks for helping a potential "live" member.

That sounds to me to be a bit on the pricey side. Check w/ KBB or NADA and see what they say the vehicle is worth. I sold my 2001 2 months ago for $19000 and all seals/brakes/tires were new. Granted a dealer would have gotten more.

With the current year end deals going, check out what a new CTD would cost. I've seen posts of people driving off the lot at $28k. There is NO comparison between the 3rd gen trucks and 2nd gen trucks (IMHO). Far more power, less noise, better towing gears, WARRANTY etc etc. It is not uncommon to get out the door with 8-10k off the sticker prices.

But heck, if you like the truck then go for it and welcome aboard. You'll love the diesel!!!

If the truck is 2wd 20,500 is way to much money even if the A/C is working. The oil at the front of the engine is coming out the breather(normal). As far as the trans. leak it could be something simple like a rear seal but I would look into it further. A/C repairs can be costly if it's the compressor so I would make sure that works if you plan on making the purchase. Around my house the used car market is in the dumps so I would offer no more than Kelley Blue Book trade in value because I'm sure the dealer didn't give them anywhere close to that. Goodluck, Eric
