Problem getting fuel pressure reading?

Hi,

I recently purchased a fuel pressure gauge ( http://www.genosgarage.com/prodinfo....ULCAN_TEST_KIT )just to make sure that my fuel injection pump was doing ok. I've got an 02' 2500 ctd but only about 36,000 miles. It's using original VP-44.

I'm trying to get pressure reading at the test port on fuel injection pump but I can't get a reading. I've tried tightening the hose down as much as I can on the test port. It still seems to leak a little fuel even when tightened down.

Right now I am just interested in getting a pressure reading. I'm not showing any signs of problems with my fuel pump or injection pump. Truck runs great but I am still interested in getting pressure reading.

Anybody have any ideas or suggestions about what I might be doing wrong?

Thanks

I had one schraeder valve I could not get a reading on. Check your fuel filter housing, it probably has a schraeder valve there also. My 01 did. If possible try another gauge setup. The fuel pressure gauge fitting should have something inside to push down on the schraeder valve to allow the gauge to see pressure. Check to make sure it is there. It really shouldn't leak when tightened, so that is probably where the problem is.
Worst case is your lift pump is dead. The injection pump will pull fuel at some low pressure, probably a couple of psi.

Dumb question, but are you opening up the shut off valve on the hose?

the only pressure you're going to be able to test at that point is the lift pump, if you're not getting any reading the pump is probably bad

You need a permanent mechanical gauge. Even if you have pressure now, you won't know when it drops. Try taking the gauge off & running the end into a bucket. Turn the key & you should see fuel & will know that the schrader valve is working.
