Power Steering Mystery

When at a stop I can only turn the wheel 1 turn in either direction before it becomes too stiff to turn. It's only a problem when trying to fit a trailer into a tight spot, in a small parking lot or stuck in the mud or snow, etc. The more you turn the wheel at slow speeds the more stiff it becomes...until you can't turn it at all.

The pickup was new to me in 2019. I drove it from Wyoming to Texas completely stock with 72k on it. The steering had a lot of slop in it and after doing some research I decided to replace the track bar with a Dodge Off Road, the gear box with a PSC HD box, the pump with a high flow PSC and swapped the y linkage to a T (Moog assembly). I can't remember if the stiffness existed when I first got the pickup as I didn't drive it much back then. I'm unable to solve the problem and ready to give up. I have a pressure/flow gage and everything seems to be in order (reading 1600 psi & 3.1 gpm), in and out of the hydroboost (also new recently). I replaced all the hoses thinking one might be restricted, no joy. New ball joints recently thinking one might be hanging up, no change. Put the y linkage back on thinking the T was binding somewhere, no change. I took it to a local reputable diesel mechanic and he gave it back to me with the same issues at no charge. Quote "this doesn't make any sense"

If anyone has any ideas they would be greatly appreciated. I'm in SE Minnesota if anyone knows of a front end wizard. I'm open to anything at this point.

Sounds like the fluid is being restricted at a certain point in the rotation.

If you jack the front end off the ground will it do it with the wheels hanging freely?

Have you had a buddy turn the wheel around to see if anything is being weird?

Just a few thoughts...Kurt
