You should be able to check it with a multimeter.....
Mirror switches are not the same 94-02. Best I can remember the plugs changed in 98 or 99. Might even be three plug style differences between 94-02.

The rest makes sense though. Just installing mirrors should have no effect on the plug. Crunching wires will cause problems and can possibly harm the switch though.

Not sure which year it happened but newer switches have a light in them.
