odometer jumping

I would like to start by say Hey..to everyone. [glow=red,2,300]Great web site[/glow]
I was hoping to get some good advise from all of you on a odometer problem that I’m having. My odometer will not start working until I get up to about 25 MPH. I looked at the speed censer to make sure it had a good hook up, and it did. Do I need to look somewhere else for the trouble?

Re:odometer jumping

Well all jokes aside ;D it could be that the speed sensor in your rear diff is either bad or dirty. Do you get ABS warning light or something the like?
You could also try the instrument cluster self test by keeping the trip reset button pushed while turning the key to the "on " position. You should see the needles take a full swing. If it's kind of edgy you have some problems in the instrument cluster.

Did you check for codes?

Re:odometer jumping

Sounds to me like a bad Speedo/Odo guage. If it was me this is where I'd start...just based on the fact that you said it does work, just not until you hit 25mph. Common problem on the cars I work on daily (don't usually work on dodge's however) and unfortuntely sometimes the self test doesn't reveal this.

Just my thoughts,

Re:odometer jumping

I'd start with the speed sensor on the rear axle. First, it is probably the problem. Second, it is much cheaper than a speedometer.

Re:odometer jumping

If it was the speedometer that didn't work until you hit 25mph I would say start with the speed sensor on the rear axle, however you did say that it was your odometer that doesn't work until you hit 25mph therefore this is why I suggest looking closer at the guage assy as it sounds like an internal circuitry problem in the guage. Maybe respond as to which one isn't working as this could clear up the confusion.

Re:odometer jumping

Sorry everyone for not getting back to ya sooner. The answer to all of your questions it is the speedometer [glow=red,2,300]“MY BAD”[/glow]Thanks for all the inputs, I will start by doing the instrument cluster self test, and then go from there. When I find out I will pass it on…

Re:odometer jumping

If it's the speedo, I'd put my money on the speed sensor on the rear axle. My speedo jumped around like that when mine went bad. Easy fix for around $30 - $35 dollars.

Re:odometer jumping

I agree as well, since it is a speedo issue then I would start with the speed sensor as well.

Re:odometer jumping

I did the speedo check and everything worked great. now step two....replacing the speed sensor. I tryed cleaning and it did help some. I'm pretty sure of having to replace the senser.
