New member - no deisel knowledge

Hi, Just bought a 1999 Dodge 1-ton dually w/24v Cummins engine. This is my first deisel and I know almost nothing about it. I hope the members of this forum will be easy on me if I ask stupid questions.

I plan to read everything posted before I start asking questions. From what I have read there seems to be a wealth of knowledge here.

My truck has a 4.10 rear end and 30,800 miles. Still not broken in I think.

Thanks in advance for any information I may receive. Cal R.

Welcome calred! You will learn much here from some great guys-and a girl or two. I suggest settling down with a beverage and your CTD owners manual one evening for starters, it contains lots of information if you read carefully. The Cummins North America website has very accurate information on your engine also. Keep in mind, the only dumb question is the one you did'nt ask. Everyone here was in your position once.

Re:New member - no deisel knowledge

you learn some thing every day on this site. i am fairly new to my ctd as well. but enjoy the feeling every time i sit in the driver seat and take off. dont think negative about all the problems you read about. because for every problem someone has there are 25,or 20! people with the same truck without the problem at all. enjoy your truck.

dingo

Welcome aboard! Glad you found us! ;D Along with the wealth of info on the boards here, you should pickup a service manual for your truck from Tech Authority, it's the best service manual you can get for your CTD!

Re:New member - no deisel knowledge

I too am a new member. I just got a 2002 Dodge Ram 3/4 ton 24valve cummins diesel 4x4. It is brand new but I got it at the used price. On the issue of breaking it in, I read in the manual the the diesel does not require breaking in due to its construction. Shoud I really buy this? Does anyone have any suggestions on exactly what I should do besides not drive it like an @$$?

Thanks.

Re:New member - no deisel knowledge

I also have a 02 Ram 4X4, and love it, it is also my first diesel. I have 10,000 miles on it, and I was told to not worry about break in. In fact I have been told by some people that the engine will "break in" if you do a few heavy pulls. Other wise it may take hundreds of thousands of miles to break in .

Re:New member - no deisel knowledge

I posted this before, it sure is nice how DC can tell us how to run an industrial diesel engine. Go down to the truck stop and ask an owner operator if he drove around "bobtail" until his engine broke in or did he hook right on to a loaded trailer that makes the payments. If you want a good ring seat make it work towing, this heats and cools the block and you would be following one recommendation that says vary speed. Coincidentally these breakin recommendations are Not found in the Freightliner operating manual which DC/MB owns for Cummins,Cat or Detroit diesel engines. PK
