need help with rear main seal!!!
need help with rear main seal!!!
So I finally got my tranny parts today!!!
Have teh tranny out and am trying to replace the rear main seal, not going so good....
I've drilled atleast 6 holes and put screws into them and every single screw has pulled out of the seal w/o the seal moving. Also I'm pretty sure that atleast one screw got out its hole and scored the aluminum housing.
I'm thinking I better pull the adapter hounsing and do it on the bench but I've rear that pulling the adapter housing can cause teh pan gasket to tear and leak. Any truth to this?
Any suggestions?
Also my seal kit came with a large steel ring(I'm guessing to intall the seal) and a large plastic ring. Whats the plastic ring for. I figured out that the smaller one is slipping over the crank.
Thanks!

The plastic ring stays inside the seal while you install it. the steel ring is a driver that sets the depth of the seal (check for evenness once it's seated... mine was cocked just a hair and I had to drive the side in just a hair more).
Mine came out hard as well. I finally gave up on the screws and drilling holes, and instead opted for the "drive one side in a little to break the seal on the outside of trhe seal housing", then pull the opposite side you drove in w/ a screw. It worked for me, might wanna give it a try.
Make sure to get ALL the oil off the crankshaft before installing that new seal, too. It's a teflon seal, that requires an oil free suface for the seal to seat to. Otherwise, it will leak.

Well I'm an idiot.....
I finally gave up and pulled the plate. BTW its 8 bolts PLUS two sneaky ones holding the tranny cooler on and the starter(found out the starter was loose and one bolt was missing
).
Anyway it will be a miracle if it doesn't leak
I had 3 huge gouges in the hosuing and some pretty good scratches on the crank journal. I spent 2 hours cleaning them up with emery cloth and applied some JB weld to the gouges in the housing.
Like I said it will be a miracle if it holds...... Once I finally pounded it out it looks like it was glued in....
Also it looks like it wasn't even the rear main, I think it was the rear cam plug. It looked brand new but there was an oil streak running down from it. It gave it a few taps with a hammer and then sealed it in RTV.
BTW here's a tip if pulling the plate, after all the bolts are out, use a sharp knife to seperate the pan gasket from the plate to prevent it from ripping. When putting it back in I laid a bead of silicone along the top of the pan gasket to help it reseal.
Can someone post the part number for the seal kit with the wear sleeve please, I think I'm going to need it down the road.

Don't think that would have worked, the sheet metal was actually ripping and the screws came out. It looks like some sort of RTV sealant or something was used when the seal was installed. Even on the bench it didn't want to come out. I had to hack saw thru the seal 90% of the way and the wack on it to break. Then it finally came out.
Yep, wish I went that way! Do you mean you have a rear main seal or the housing plate?
I'm hoping it will be ok..... I'm in Helena Montana right now(1/3rd of teh Way to Moab!) and it looks ok so far......
Pulls awesome with the new tranny parts!
