Manual tow mirror Question...

Just need some advice on adjusting a problem mirror. The truck is a 2001 2500 with the manual tow mirrors. (no heat or power) The problem is that when you close the door the mirror loses position. Is there a good fix for this? Thanks in advance.

Is the mirror loosing position at the glass or at the pivot?? If it is at the pivot you can take it apart and see if it is repairable. You have to remove the mirror, then take the plastic cover off the bottom and remove the star clip. There is a big spring under the star clip and three ball bearings that latch into three holes.
If it is worn or the spring broke it will not stay in place. To reassemble it you will need to flatten the star clip with a hammer, tape it to a deep socket and prss it all back together in a vise. Look up power mirrors on 2nd gen in the search they have nice directions. If it is at the glass then I would just buy a mirror on ebay.

Slide a putty knife between the mirror glass and the backing plate, once off you can pull the star wheel with channel locks and turn it back in kind of creating 'threads' on the nylon shaft its on. Clean off the flat discs of silicone and reapply some silicone sealant in the same spots and press back on. I taped mine with masking tape overnight and they have stayed in place for over a year now..the glass, not the adjustment. I have to occasionally reposition them, but not like before I tightened them up. Kurt
