Loose mirrors
Loose mirrors
A friend of mine has just bought a 97 1-ton. He says it is in really good condition except that the side mirrors are loose. They will move in while going down the road. They are the chrome mirrors. I believe he will have to take the door panel off, but I'm not really sure. I had a 95 one ton but that has been to long ago and I never had that problem. Can anyone give some help on this problem.
Thanks,

I have the chrome mirrors also and had the same problem. I took the mirrors off and peeled back the foam seal, there are two screws that secure a metal tab under there. Remove the screws and tab and you will see the rectangular pin that locks the mirror in position. I removed the locking pin and cut some shim stock, I think it was .006 wrap it around the locking pin and push it all the way into the locking pins seat put it all back together. Really tight now.
I had similar problems on my 96. As stated above, the door panel has to be removed to access the hold down bolts for the mirror. I found the 'clamp' screws stripped. Drilling and retapping (adding a nut to the back side where room was available) fixed mine. You want them tight but not so much that they'll cause damage to the door if hit.
