flip-out 2001 style mirrors loose!

:-[ Does anyone out there have any info or experience with the flip-out trailer-towing mirrors that came out in 2001? I put a set on my '98 about a year and a half ago,and now the passenger side glass portion seems to be loose in the socket. It doesn't hold it's position, now.I don't see if or how they come apart to tighten it up. Driver's side is nice and tight...any thoughts out there? Thanks.

The good news is, they can be fixed. The bad news is, the glas mirror has to be removed to do it.
Here's what it looks like behind the glass.

The stuff you see around the star shaped thing is "Liquid Nails"
What I did was take a socket that fit over the center shaft and tapped the star shaped hold-down enough to tighten the whole assembly. Then I shot some liquid nails in there to keep the hold-down from sliding back up the shaft and coming loose again.

Thanks for the reply, that's great info.So now is there a way to remove the mirror glass without breaking it? I imagine the glass is glued on? Also can a replacement glass be obtained from Chrysler,or does it have to be custom cut at a glass shop? Thanks so much for the interest.

Re:flip-out 2001 style mirrors loose!

The galss is held on with a few of those double sided sticky tabs and a few dabs of silicone.
I used a hair dryer to loosen the adhesive, then I used a couple of small screwdrivers to lift the glass enough on one side to slide a flat scraper under the glass and just worked it around. Worked great on the first mirror, not so great on the second one. $17.00 at the local glass shop and I was back in business. Luckily, the mirror is a plain flat piece of glass that any glass shop can cut with ease. The even installed the glass in the mirror.
I would plan on replacing the glass, that's just my way of looking at it. Still much cheaper than new mirrors.

Thanks again for the reply, it's great to get this kind of support! I was contemplating taking a hammer to it, but I will try your suggestion with the hair dryer,I might get lucky!

They won't warranty them if they didn't come on your truck. I tried that method when I bought the ones I fixed.
Unless you bought them from a dealer and have the receipt, I wouldn't even waste my time with the dealer.

I did buy them from a Dodge dealership and do have the receipt, but it was June of 2001,and I think that parts are only warrantied for one year....but fixing them right is better than pulling the door panels off again, then again when the new ones fail!

I think they are supposed to be 250-275 Canadian(about 165-180 US) that was in June,2001. I really like the mirrors, although I miss the power/heated features from the originals, but as you know the originals are useless for towing,Can't even see past dually fenders, let alone a trailer!

97CTD,
Shop cost is US$220 from D/C. Retail is around US$245. They can be found on the web for a little less than that but you have to pay shipping. If you have a business license and/or a good relationship with the parts counter guys you can get them for shop cost.
