looking at truck online...what ya think?

Hello, I'm looking online at a 2002 2500 cummins auto, red sport, qc long bed, 4x4. Has brand new 35 inch buckshots. Has the basics pw, pdl, tilt, etc and 124,000 miles. Supposedly asking 14,900. Emailed the guy to get more pics and he says well I'm only asking 12,900. That got me interested. The new pics show a big dent right above the passenger headlight. Little one on bed and one on bumper. Talked to him on the phone and asked about lift/injection pump and guy didn't seem to know what I was talking about (uh-oh). Says 4x4 works good and drives pretty straight. The problem, I'm in bargersville, IN and truck is in Biloxi, Mississippi. Pics look pretty good other than what I mentioned. Paint is shiny etc.

So what do yall think? Forgot to mention he is overseas so his wife is supposed to get me more pics of the dents/scratches etc. Seems really good but just wish it was closer to me! This can't be a 53 block can it? Guess I could buy a fp gauge and take it if I went down there right? I wasn't really looking to buy a truck right now but this ones got me interested. Almost seems too good to be true or is it? Thanks guys.

First off, I once bought a nice dodge cummins for a good deal.. Was promised to be shipped to me, never was. Lost all of my money and Im still batteling with the 2 banks trying to get at least something back... I also wonder why he is over seas?? Did he ask you to send the money over seas to him??? Maybe someone here is in that area they can go check it out for ya?? I believe it CAN be a 53 block, I think they still had some left in early 2001...

I don't think a 53 block would be in an '02...someone else with more knowledge will chime in.
Looks like a nice truck and a good price....if you are REALLY serious buy a one a ticket, test drive it, and drive it home if all seems OK. (I know, could be a bit of a gamble, but chances are if he's overseas...he's at war for our country and looking at buying a brand new one upon return...)
A good deal close to home could turn into a lemon too...you never know with used vehicles.

A few years ago when I needed another Dodge diesel I looked at a several that were located in Oklahoma since I was in Kansas at the time. Found four on the internet and took the trip to see them all. The four trucks were junk but when I stoped by a dealer just to see if they had anything before going home a 97 pulled up out front and I asked the lady driveing it if they might sell it and I bought it the next day and drove it home.
Have someone that knows what their looking at check it out before you make the trip. There's got to be someone on here in the area that might be able to do it.

Well his wife is at home. I would probably drive down there with my brother and I would buy it and drive it back. I didn't ask why he was overseas figured its really none of my business if he is or isn't. Bottom line is I would go see truck and wouldn't hesitate to drive back to Indiana if it wasn't what he claimed it to be. If someone knows someone or can check it out for me that would be absolutely great!! But the chances of that are slim I'm guessing although I may be willing to paypal someone some cash to test drive it for me, lol. I'm thinking if I could get it for 12k even which may be long shot I would just bite the bullet and drive down there to see it. I was under the impression that 53's were only up to model year '01 but wasn't 100% sure. Also, guy said he had only driven it 2000 miles and he's only had it since November. Said he isn't pulling anything thats why he's selling. Keep the thoughts coming!

How many miles are on it? Start a thread in the help area and see if anyone can look at it.

IMO...for the "work" required to get that truck to you in the "conditions" you expect it to be or promised to be far out weighs the financial gains. I'm sure if you poke around enough or longer you can locate one of your choice.

Be careful. I heard alot of trucks and cars coming out of the south near louisiana were ruined in hurricane katrina. Be careful about it. Just a thought. Some dishonest people might try to pass them off when they know they were damaged in the Hurricane. Pete

Yeah thats definitly something to keep in mind, with no matter what kind of vehicle you buy. There are all sorts of vehicles out that they people are trying to sell as if they were in "great condition" that have actually had water damage or have been in an accident.

Well he told me yesterday when I talked to him that his wife would call and send more pics but she never did. I'm gonna see if his wife contacts me in the next day or two.

I'm thinking its just too far. If it were 4-5 hours I'd probably go see it but its 787 miles one way from my house according to mapquest. Also, like I say there was a big dent above the headlight and one on the back bumper and also the headlights are oxidized pretty good. Makes me wonder about the rest of the truck. I would prefer one in better shape but then I keep thinking what a good price it is. But really I can't justify making a 2-3 day trip to look at a truck that may or may not be in that great of shape. I don't want to make the big trip buy it and everything and then find one within a couple hours of home thats in better shape, etc a few months down the rode. And and the guy on the phone didn't seem to know much about the truck at all and I'm not to fond of gambling and finding out what a guy who doesn't know his own truck's definition of "good shape" is. But anyway I'm gonna see if his wife ever gets back to me and make a final decision. Thanks for the opinions by the way.
