Looking at possibly buying Gen 2

Hey guys was wondering what you all thought about this, a guy offered to sell me this truck
2002 quad cab 4x4 short bed Auto Camper Shell 140,000 miles $10,000 on the price tag. I known the owner for awhile he has only put 8,000 on it since he had it he says, only used it for hauling something like load of wood and stuff. I know the previous owner before him, he used it for running parts. It did have tranny trouble a before they had that fixed. I have not actually at for a long time but remember the truck what it had. He says runs great. I was looking for another truck to turn into a hunting rig. I never had a auto before so I was hoping it has 4:10s which he was going to look for the tag in the glove box to verify. I wanted to run 37s on this truck if I do buy it. From what I have seen guys say 3.73s, Auto, and 37s don't mix? Could have higher gears not sure yet. Should I or shouldn't I? Any questions or something to look for? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Well I am jealous....Got my eye on the same truck here in NOrCAl....2001 2500 SB/QC Auto with 91k for $19k at a dealership and the best i can get is $19.5 out the door....so where you are really changes the price of things. If i could get it for $16.5...

I'd say the price is a steal, 4.10's would be superior to the more common and other option 3.54's. The miles are nothing for that truck. I wouldn't worry about tranny repairs. All vehicles need work at some point, the best you can do is maintain it the best you can while you own it.

Even if it needed a new tranny you would still be ahead and could get your money out of it IF it's in the condition you think it's in. There is no way I would let mine go for anywhere near that price.

Oh yeah, no 3.73s on an 02 so it's either 4.10 or 3.55. I would do the key trick to check for codes and put a fuel pressure gauge on it just to be sure it'll make it home. Good luck and let us know if it's as good of a deal as what you're thinking.

Thanks guys. I will defiently check what hamilton71801 suggested, Thanks.

Well to add to the price he is asking for on the 02, he bought it from his boss for that price 10K. His boss offered him some money or sell him the truck for taking care of his work truck so well as a bonus. He put well over 300K on his Dodge work truck and is still running strong. He never had one problem other than normal wear on wearable parts. His boss got him a new truck 06 last year and took the 300K truck out of service and sold it. I think that truck was a 97or 98. THe guy pulls a big ditch witch all over the oilfield everyday.

Most likely first of the year I am going to purchase the truck.

Even if the truck has 3.55s what is a gear swap going to run roughly?

That sounds very cheap to me. You may want to check if the truck has a 53 block or not. But even if it did that's still a heck of a deal.
