Looking at a 2500 CTD 4x4, need advice

First of, I was looking for a 12v with a manual shortbox between 97 and 98.4, but there are none around >. Anyway, I found a 97 12v extended cab with no third door, long bed. The truck has 47,000 mile with an auto.

What would be a good price on this truck?

Anything I should look for?

edit: I guess I should have listed the price. They are asking $18,000 and some change. I've been reading up on the 24v, I guess I have to do the same on the 12v. Thanks for any help.

look for oil from the front case to see if the kdp has fallen out...47,000 is low miles for a 97..price may be a little high but if its a clean truck its probably worth it...

good luck

is the truck your looking at a 4x4? if you said I missed that part. Here in the midwest a 98 12v club cab(no rear doors) 4x4 long bed 5 speed normally will bring 17 to 17,000 depending on miles and condition from all the ones I've priced. Now the same truck loaded and/or a sport package with quad cab it's basically a sellers market, they can set the price at whatever they want someone will pay it.

mike it sounds as though the market in n.c. is higher than here in the northwest. i saw a 99 ctd 4x4 quad with 55k for 19k the other day. Given the changes in the auto/trans between 97 and say 99 and the adances in the fuel system /electronics etc i would not buy a 12v unless you are looking for a simpler setup. tyr to get fuel system maint info by records or looking at the rig because that can be very expensive if it has not been maintained properly. Then of course look for leaks at the main seals the transfer case the frt and rear thied member and looke to see if the radiator has ever been serviced. Hope this helps. ;D

Mike,

If you can find a good 12V buy it......sure the 24V make more hp in stock form but that can be easily changed. IMO, the 12V is a better truck and should last longer than the 24's. Im looking for a 12 myself - hopefully it will cause less headache from the fuel system.

Thanks for all the replys. I guess I'm getting anxious about my search. I don't want to loose a bunch of money on trade in plus pay too much for a CTD. It seems like every truck I look at here in NC is higher than what most other states are asking for the same truck. Maybe, diesels in NC are in high demand. I'm going to keep looking until I find the right truck for the right price.

I called about a truck in GA from Choice Auto. They offered $12,000 for my trade, which is a 02 Nissan Xterra SE/SC 4x4 with low milage. I was floored. As if the trade-in prices aren't low enough those "nice guys" where willing to offer me 12 grand. I told the salesman to tell his manager that he was a crook.

I going to try and sell my truck and buy a truck from a private seller. Maybe then, I won't feel like I was just run over. If used car salesman are tired of their rep. then they can thank the guy in GA helping it to live on. Are there any honest used car salesman or is that an oxymoron?

Look on the Internet. That is what I did and found my 97 CTD for about 2k less than the dealer with 105k miles for $16k.

Just look around until you find one because they are out there.

Good Luck, Srigs

Mike ,
It has been my experience that you cannot win when you trade in a vehicle. I had bought a brand new minivan from a local dealer, and also had purchased another vehicle 6 months prior. When we went in 18 months ago to trade in for a Jeep Grand Cherokee, the offered us $7k. We spent $23k on it new, and it had less than 30K miles. I told them to shove it, and left. I will not buy a vehicle from a dealer again, too many private parties to deal with.

Amen Tiny---ditto ditto ditto.

The other alternative, find out the cash price you would pay out the door. THEN introduce the fact that you would have to sell your "other" car prior to making the deal. That will give you a real indication of what you're getting for yours.

PS. Dealers deal the most at months end.....it boosts their sales figures.

Hey Guy, I became a CTD owner this past weekend. I didn't go for the 97 model. I found a 1999 quad cab, short box, 4x4 with 38,000 miles. I looked high and low for the 53 block stamp and found nothing. I think the sales guy was getting POed because it was cold and windy. Thanks for the helpful post.
