A Little bit of Smoke?
A Little bit of Smoke?
Diesel Gods,
A little smoke never hurt anything.
Every once in a while when I'm on the highway and I step on it to pass someone, I get a little bit of black smoke. Or when I start it for the first time of the day. It doesn't bother me because I'm not he one getting passed with smoke in my face.
Does this sound like a bigger problem? ??? Love my CTD. ;D

Re:A Little bit of Smoke?
Smoke DOESN'T equal power....smoke=unburned fuel (carbon is all it is). a little smoke is good for power, too much low end fuel bogs the motor/turbo(s) down.
however, smoke is definately CooOOoooOOoOoooOol.. ;D

I agree that smoke is unburned fuel....I was trying to be a little silly. But, If there isn't enough fuel to make smoke, you probably aren't gong to make exceptional power. Think about it, how much smoke does a stock CTD make? Not much, they run fine, but they CAN run better. Smoke on the upper end is a bad thing, you are just putting fuel out the tailpipe. Smoke on the bottem end is the price we pay to have the fuel on the top end.

Re:A Little bit of Smoke?
oh yeah, true. not enough fuel=low power. unless you're running the afc spring kit, you need a good puff of smoke at the bottom end to make up for fueling in the middle. i'm just getting to point that some think that when you're putting a good amount of black smoke out: in order to get better spool up, you ADD more fuel. no, that just bogs the motor down and actually prolongs spool up. then once boost comes on it tends to snap rather than having a somewhat smooth rise with a little bit of smoke.
and yeah, with a #0 plate, i smoke through the whole rpm band too (also running against the governor at 2900rpms with the stock converter isn't helping either for the top end
)

Re:A Little bit of Smoke?
My H.O. work truck puts out some smoke after I shift. It's only got a K&N air filter and straight piped exhaust, and it's smoked as long as I can remember having it. It shouldn't be anything to worry about.
Re:A Little bit of Smoke?
no, i wouldn't worry about it. i don't know your elevation (tx? i assume pretty low..), but all stock diesels smoke up here at 7200feet. Iron Horse's truck smokes when he gets into the throttle.

I've never seen a diesel that didn't smoke on start up, especially on a cold engine, nor have I ever seen one that didn't smoke when putting the "Pedal to the metal". They don't smoke much but if you're watching they'll smoke. Smoking is a very bad habit - unless it is a diesel. ;D
