Joel, I think I'd have to tell the guy that I had a 5.9 in my tractor and sell me the part.

Lucky for me, my local Cummins shop isn't that ignorant.
(although I have had to look my own parts up for them a couple of times)
To them, a part is a part, a sale is a sale.

the stant 190 and the cummins 180 looked identical....the original tstat was a 180 caltherm which is built heavier. got the stant at pepboy for 31.00 and the cummins form long island truck parts for 28.00.

I had to replace mine recently, and got it from the local CarQuest. The had both the 180 and 190 on the shelf!

It was $30 US, and came with the O rings.

When it warms up, it gets to just a shade under the 190 mark on the factory heat gauge, and stays right there.

The only time I notice it was fluctuating was few days ago when I had a trailer of power pols in tow, and it got to the top of the safe range. Then it dawned on methat it was 60*f out, and I had not taken my "Curtains" off. Pulled into a truck stop, and pulled 'em. The temp was back to normal before I hit the Interstate again.

It would be nice if I could get it to warm up a little faster, though. It I plug it in, it is not too bad, but I have to park it overnight, once in a while, in a spot with no plug. Then it takes 8 or 10 miles to get it to temp, and the heater is not blazing hot at that. My old gasser would flat run you out of the cab if you turned the heat up all of the way. My wife misses that. She is always cold.

Ya know, being female, if I fix that she will whine about something else!

Am I right to assume the heater is not going to be overly hot?

This is an old thread...

Actually, I took the Stant thermostat back and got a Cummins stat. Cost a bit more but is built a lot better. Never hurts to use OEM parts.

Reading this thread for the first time, I guess since I don’t live in Arctic climate conditions I don’t understand, but down here in the south all of us want the new 180º thermostats. On my 24-valve, I love my 180 t-stat, no more overheating problems, engine runs cool as a clam, its great. Same for my 12-valve. I guess if lived in Alaska-like climates, I’d want to have a fast warm up time.

im with you all the way on stant stat. when original stat stuck open, went to dealer and almost had aheart attack. they wanted 51$ for stat and 10$ more for the seals! well, flew out of there and went to napa, bought 180 stat for 8.95 including seals. go figure. stat has been in for about 2yrs and works like the original.

That was actually a better dealer price than most! Still gouging though...

Question The answer is probably no...

But will the 195º '00 24V T-Stat p/n 3937171 work in a '94-'98 12 valve?

You would think that it should....BUT the part numbers are different...

http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/Facts/94specs.html

http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/Facts/98ISBspecs.html

Early 12V's used: 3928499

24V's - 1998-1999: 3935811
2000-2002: 3954194 (180° ) 3937171 (190°)

I think Cummins should be able to teel you if that stat would work for you.
