Infinity speakers

I know that there has been many posts about the front left speaker going out and people replacing the entire system but my question is " has anyone found out why the speaker stops working? I took my left front door apart tonight and can't find anything out of place. The left tweeter doesn't work but the left front door speaker does just no amped power by the sound. if you crank it up you can hear the speaker is getting a signal. The rear left door speaker and all others work fine.
I have read that the front speaker amp fires the rear speaker. If so why is the rear working? I hate this truck more and more everyday. Just goes to show that bigger and better is not always the easiest.. I just don't want to sink $$$ into the sound system because I am getting very close to cutting this truck loose. The last straw is on the hill and that might be the one that breaks the back of the great humped one!!!
Any help please!

Something else I tried since I last posted, I took a volt meter out and took some readings. On the ten wire plug at the door that the speaker is plugged into I took a reading at all wires to ground.
Yellow-5 volts Purple-5 volts
Orange-5 volts Blue-5 volts
Green- 0
White-12 volts
Brown-6 volts Black-6 volts
grey-6 volts Red-6 volts

Brown-grey 2.31 ohms
Black-red 2.31 ohms
They were the only that showed anything
Green I guess is ground

Does this mean anything?

sounds like it's not the speaker, but the crossover/amp that has taken a dump. the Infinity system is not actually made by Infinity, but designed by Infinity and has some features that you would not find on a normal system.
they've combined the amp and crossovers into one unit, so you can't replace a bad crossover without replacing the entire amp and vice versa, which is why people usually scrap the whole system when something goes bad.
because you're getting an un-amped signal to your left speaker and no signal to the left tweet, i would guess the crossover/amp is the problem.
does the left front speaker sound blown or just un-amped?

My left front speaker took a dirt nap a couple of months ago.

I tried unhooking the 2 wires from the old speaker and hooking up a different speaker. I got sound.
That showed the speaker itself was toast.

Just scored 2 Chrysler/Infinity fronts and rears on Ebay.

Hey chipmonk, the speaker when you choose front left sounds ok as far as the quality just have to turn up the radio all the way to hear it. At normal volume if you put your head ( ear ) by the speaker you can just hear it. Not to sure about if you can actually hear the tweeter at all but I don't think.
What does anybody think about a new factory speaker, can they still be had. What about if I take the truck to the dealer how would they go about fixing the problem. this crossover/amp you speak of, where is it located and can that be replaced? As I type I remember that
one day last winter when this all started I got an extreme amount of feed back from all speakers and the when it settled out I was missing the front left. So far thanks for the replies..

Hey Shovelhead I read earlier that a person has to be careful about hooking different speakers to the head unit because of 2 ohm-4 ohm thing. Why do they have to make these things so complicated? What ever happened to running 2 wires to each speaker? I just would like to have stereo sound again as I now have her tuned into the Sirius.

After searching for replacement stock speakers for weeks, I was going back and forth about replacing the Infinity 2 Ohm speakers with 4 ohm ones from Crutchfield.

Then I found these on Ebay.

the 'Infinity' system uses component speakers, which need a crossover to send the proper frequencies to the mid-bass driver and the tweeter. in normal aftermarket systems this crossover is a little box that would probably be found in the dash near the tweets or in the door, but in this bizarre set-up it is actually combined with the amp into one unit, and is located behind the dash, i think (nevermind, Shovelhead has clued me in that on the older trucks each front speaker has it's own amp/crossover). before you even consider shelling out any cash on factory replacements, i would seriously consider going aftermarket with your system, which will get rid of all the quirky factory stuff you have going on now.
now you know why so many people go out of their way to avoid this upgrade when they buy their truck.

On the older trucks, the amp & crossover is attached to the L&R front door speaker cage.

For more info on the "Infinity" stsyem:

so the older trucks have individual amps for each speaker?
if each replacement speakers come with a new amp/crossover, than it doesn't matter if the speaker itself is blown or it's an amp/crossover problem since replacing the speaker replaces everything, correct?

The front speakers have the amp/crossover.

FINDING replacements is the hard part.

Any factory system is pretty much giong to be a POS, no matter who designed it. I have the Infinity system on my "96 2500. As a musician and audiophile, I will say it is crap. My wife's factory Subaru system sounds better. Just go to Crutchfield, and get gear that fits your specific vehicle. Go ahead, drop a few duckies. Replace that old thing. Trust me- it isn't really an infinity. They don't make crap like that. As someone already said, it is only designed by Infinity.

other than the ones in these factory systems, i don't think you'll find another 'Infinity' speaker that uses paper cones.

Absolutely right! I know we all want to avoid spending $, but to get good sound from these vehicles, you have to replace the entire system. I just replaced my stock "Infinity" HU two days ago. The new HU works fine, but the speakers (still powered by the original amps) sound like absolute garbage! My next project is to replace those cheap, paper-coned, clock radio sounding speakers with some decent ones. Then, I can power them with my HU, or even better, a separate amp. Of course, a sub is down the road, too.

On the '02 6 speaker Infinity system do you need anything special to run an aftermarket HU e.g. do the Infinity speakers/amp require low level inputs like GMs crappy Bose?
