Im buying a 99 2500 Cummins what do I look for?
Im buying a 99 Dodge 2500 Cummins Quad cab auto tranny w/ 86k miles for $14k. Are there any major concerns or problems I should look for when I inspect it. Its only had 1 owner and we ran a car fax and it has never been wrecked. Its been serviced regularly by the dealership.
Some things id look for if i were to do it again.. easy to do a search on these topics.
Cracking "53" Block (theres the numbers "53" on the lower front part of the engine block. visible when looking from ground up. some of these blocks crack, most of them dont. just be aware that its possible)
Injection Pump failures - test fuel pressure/have dealership test
Lift Pump Failures- test fuel pressure/have dealership test
Quad door operations (some cables wear with time.. make sure they open easy)
Cracked dashboard (common amongst alot of these year.. factor it into the price if present)
Cracked exhaust manifold usually happens right around where the turbo mounts. Obvious cracks will be highlighted black due to soot escaping. check top and bottom, factor into price.
Remove air intake hose (when engine is cold) and check turbo for side to side play. Should wiggle a little but if you can feel it hit the sides thats bad.
Look for signs of aftermarket equipment (holes on the plastic panels near steering wheel, holes on apillar).
Definetly want to do the usual like check for wetspots all underneath... axle seals, around brakes, trans, engine, etc.
Also ask in advance for coupons for free haircuts.. This will minimize how bad of a flat spot you got on your head of hair when you SIT UP TALL in your new2you dodge.
If its in great shape then it sounds like a good deal for low miles..
Is it 4x4 or 2wd? 2wd i may want to talk them down closer to 12k.
