How to read engine code?

While towing my 11,000 trailer up a steeper section of I80 yesterday, I set an engine code.
How does one read a code without a reader and where is a list of them. When I owned my POS chev suburban with a diesel, I could use a paperclip in the plug lead on the dash and get the codes to flash, then compare it with a list. I set codes all the time on that engine........
One thing this was doing for the last year was shuddering around 1800 rpm. It seemed like the tourqe convertor but the tranny shop said no codes so they couldn't confirm. thoughts?
Yesterday was my first towing experience with my heavy trailer. My engine is stock except for an edge ez that totally awakened that engine! when the code set I was doing 50mph temp was not out of the normal zone, maybe 210, but the truck hiccuped and the engine light came on. No smell, smoke or any other performance problem. I pulled over and let it cool. Light is still on but runs great. All gauges were good.
Could be:
Fueling or lack of.
Excessive EGT (Outside temp was 70 deg)
Tourqe converter slip?

Just need to run that code.

I have been thinking of RV275's and one of those Big air filter/cleaners with the sock? good idea to go with the Edge EZ.
A lot of questions, but I'm new to this and just want a reliable truck that can haul a load.
Thanks.
Jan

You do not have what the truck is. The later models could be read from the dash, the earlier models had to have a scanner hooked up.

Copy the info you have in your profile to the signature box so we can see it without clicking on your profile.
On your '01 turn the key off/on three times without starting to read the codes off the odometer.

P1693 is a "companion" code.
It is thrown in the PCM (Dodge computer) when the ECM (Cummins Computer) has a code that the PCM doesn't recognize.

If that is the only one showing up in the odometer, then you probably have another one that can only be seen with the official Dodge DRB code reader, available only at your friendly neighborhood Dodge Dealership.
The Tranny shops code reader can't communicate with the Dodge/Cummins setup.

As to list of codes online, these two seem to work best, anything missing from one can be found on the other, usually.
