Exhaust items? I have a 2001 and just thought that they had stainless exhaust systems on them. Guess not. This is my first diesel and has almost 100,000 miles on it but I didn't think that were hard on exhaust systems. Is this about normal wear? Thanks guys,

The exhaust system should outlast the truck. But then again, being up north the road salt may have gotten the best of it. Oh well. Time for a 4" exhaust.

When you talk about.....

a 4 inch straight pipe, are you saying that you don't have a muffler in there?? Just trying to understand what I'm reading here. Thanks,

You got it. My whole exhaust system is composed of a piece of 4" aluminized pipe that runs from my turbo all the way to the back with a nice 5" tip on it. You gotta love the look on people's faces when you drive by.

Yeah, my exhaust went bad too.

Replaced it one time only.

Dang BigBlue, How loud is that thing?

I'm gettin old and going on a cross country trip with a slid in camper this summer. Just the thought of that roaring would drive me nuts I think. How much louder is it than stock. Most all the noise from my truck is from the engine it seems. Unlike the new Dodges that you almost can't hear run. Where would the fun be in that?? Thanks,

The straight exhaust is a bit quieter than the stacks - being that the end of the exhaust is at the back of the truck compared to the back of the cab. I have stacks on mine (with no muffler/resignator) and I found that I can NOT drive down the freeway with the rear window open in the summer - can't even hear the engine, let alone the radio. Course it's a great way to keep the old ladies mouth shut too!

Varmint, I had it dumped under the bed for about 2 years and that was incredibly loud. Once I got it piped back over the axle, it quieted down. Cruising at 70 you can hear a very faint rumble but that's about it. Now, when you stand on it, all bets are off. She comes alive and sings for ya. You can also put a muffler on it to help quiet it down as well.

Lots of good aftermarket exhaust systems out there. They range from stock sound levels to very loud if you want.

Yeah just run a muffler on a 4" system and it will be fine...not much louder than stock, but not quite stock either

Let's see. My Mercedes had about 187k miles on it before the flex section of the downpipe gave out, other than that it is still stock exhaust... looking pretty good to for being 23 years old. Yet another thing to love about diesels. IMO stainless exhaust is a waste of money (well maybe stainless mufflers are ok ), plus it is heavier.

If anything above stock noise level drives you nuts then a 4" and towing will put you in a straight jacket.

Use a flow through muffler, not a straight pipe. If you are over 50 you won't like the drone of a straight pipe.

Good info, just bought a 2001 CTD for mostly towing. Missouri is cracking down on running straight pipes and no muffler = no pass on the inspection. My truck is all stock except for a K&N air filter. After I have the gauges installed, will decide if the 4" with a muffler will make its way on the truck. We take long trips, don't need to loose anymore hearing.
