how many miles will a dodge go

i am considering purchasing a 2000 dually with 342,000 miles.i am unable to contact the previous owner to see if anything has been replaced.the truck is immaculate and runs and drives perfect.i would be pulling a 3 car trailer with this truck.do you think the odds would be with me or against me if i purchased this truck.

that is has been maintained, i would think it would last you at least 300K more, Make sure that the lift pump on that 24V has been replaced and make sure that there are some maintainance records at least. I am not too familiar with 24V's people like Big Blue and JOhn Rodriguez and merrick cummings can better assist you, but i have seen one around with 450K and still runs very well... its a 1999 24V too, one ton as well, but regular cab...

Best of luck

Tx

it hard to say how long it will last..... we have shop trucks we dont even take care of and just get abuse by the parts guys after they have been salesman trucks, of the 4 trucks they all have over 350,000 , only one is a 12v. other three are 24v each truck has been thru one tranny and one pump each , the 12v has never even been touched , I think we did a valve adjust once on that one. LOL and we are a Cummins distributorship. they will last and very forgiving in stock form.

What I'm hearing for a rule of thumb is about 400K - 500K without any problems. This is a stock configuration.

I guess you are referring to the engine?

My opinion is this is a half-million mile engine in a hundred thousand mile pick-up. Although your results may vary.

Otherwise, the manufacturers would be selling twenty percent of the vehicles they are selling now. That would hurt earnings pretty bad. Sure, they could make the vehicles better, but then they would cost more.

So, we must be vigorous in our efforts to maintain what we have. Fix the known problem areas and keep an ete on everything else.

the price on it is 11,500.i was wondering about the life expectancy of the drivetrain in general. i know how it was treated will have a lot to do with how long things last. is there any warning signals on the motor, trans, transfer, and diffs before they go.

dang! thats a good price. click the ignition into the "on" position 3 times, then look for any codes on the odometer and come back here with your findings. also take a boo at the track bar, ball joints and tie rod ends. those are prone to frequent replacement, and can be costly if you don't do it yourself.
for the tranny, apart from giving it a rigorous test drive (1 hour each time), check the tranny dip stick for metal filings.
for the transfer case, i usually just pop the truck into all drive ranges (4hi/lo/2wd) and drive around a bit in 4x4 mode.
diffs i think you'd have to pull the covers and check for metal in the bottom if you don't hear any clunking. clunking is usually a dead giveaway, or any looseness when driving.
thats pretty much everything i did on my truck (its got quite a few less miles than yours though) the only thing is, i checked my front end after i bought it...luckily i'm mechanically inclined, so i can do it all myself. otherwise i'd be paying $2300 CDN to get it done.
anyway, i hope that helps,
Ian

take it to a diesel mechanic and do a fuel pressure test, or a pre-purchase inspection too...the dealers usually do that as well.

The board is vastly inferior to this one, but this thread was intersting, apart for the moron with 49k on his. WOW Really piling on the miles there.

LMAO....When I read the title of this thread..."WHO HAS THE MOST MILES ON THEIR CUMMINGS?"

You know something is wrong when they can't even spell Cummins right.

Over 300K and above $11K? seems a bit high. I got my truck with 210K for $8k, which was a steal. I personally would not pay that, cause I have gotten and seen many other deals that were much better (9CTDs between my dad and i), I would check kelly blue book for trade in value, then give them about 2000 more, as far as i know you might be right on target. my $.02 worth

I have seen ads for trucks for sale with cummings engines. One was a truck trader ad posted by a dealer. "WALK OUTSIDE AND LOOK AT THE DOOR OF YOUR TRUCK!!" goes through my mind every time I see that.

Good sign of minimal maintinance if they don't even know who made the engine.
