How to check codes

I cant seem to find the sticky or in the tech facts how to check codes on a 2002. Does it require a handheld or can you do it buy the on off method, Can someone please point me in the right direction?

If all you get is the 1693, you'll need a code scanner to find the hidden code.

Sometimes even those won't spit the code out, and you'll need the Dealerships fancy schamncy code reader.

What sort of symptoms are you having? Most of the time it seems that when these trucks act up its the vp44 injection pump. Thats how and why a lot of people find this site such as myself!

I think, but don't know that that code is the crank shaft position sensor code.

Take it to the local auto parts store and have them read it. Advanced autoparts is my favorite.

The crankshaft position is an easy fix.http://www.dodge-diesel.org/articles/cps/ckp.htm

Did you keep watching it a bit longer after the 1693?

Easy way: "Honey I need this $600 code reader. It scans & clears codes, the instuction book describes the codes, it calibrates the speedo for different tire sizes, and it saves fuel $$". It's called a SMARTY!
