Lately it seems like my oil pressure gets higher than it used to. My oil pressure gauge reads 0-40-110.

When I start the truck up the gauge stays in the brackets for middle range but it gets on the high end side. Possibly around 75-80. After the truck gets up to normal temps the gauge comes back down to 40 & sometimes lower. The needle never gets out of the brackets showing middle range, but it seems like it used to always stay fairly close to top center.

Is it normal for the oil pressure to be up this high right after starting the truck? What can cause these changes in oil pressure readings?

 

oil pressure sender is known to do wonky things, and cannot be trusted as the PCM/ECM decides where it thinks the operator(you) wants the oil pressure to be, the signal from the sender is modified by ECM to read higher on the gauge so that the operator is not alarmed by lower readings.

This is actually written in the repair manual, apparently dodge did this because too many people were complaining of "low" oil pressure

so dont trust your gauge...if you suspect its faulty, plumb in a mechanical one over on the oil filter housing to confirm actual oil pressure

 

Mine does this too and its right according to the edge when i first start the truck it'll start at 25-26 and when im driving it'll stay up around 75-80

 

My gauge started acting up like this then just pegged at the 110 mark any time the engine was running. It turned out to be a bad sender.

These ranged in price from 383.00 at the dealer down to 112.00 at the local big rig store that carries and services Cummins stuff.

Get your CPL # off your engine if you are gonna order a new sender and don't be alarmed if it doeasn't look like the old one!

Put in a mechanical guage and get real readings. My mechanical shows 70-80 running down the road when it's warm out and 25 -30 at idle in traffic. Right now on First startup ity hits 100 until the oil warms up.

 

Thanks for the info. It sounds like from all the posts on this problem that people have posted that the sending unit goes out a lot. Have you had to replace yours also?

 

Yes, mine was "stuck" at the high side of the gauge, lasted a yr "stuck" before it started with the check gauges light, If I remember I paid like 80$ for a gauge that is not even accurate...
