Have a problem with the fuel guage dropping down,sending off the chime then resetting itself.Does this mostly right after fill up and for about 100 miles,after this it is only once in a while..goes off so much I don't even hear it anymore..any ideas? I am leaning toward sender,but I am told there is some type of sensor on the sender itself that might cause this and can be replaced by itself.Any one know anything about this?

 

The fuel tank module that sits in the fuel comes out as a unit. The fuel level sender is mounted on the side of the tank module and it has the float and arm attached to it.
According to the mopar guys, the sender ($50) can be replaced without replacing the whole module($400). They recomend that you buy a new gasket for the module but I have reused mine without trouble.

 

I got a question My sending unit has been out for a long time. I go to dodge and ask for a new one. They guy says what year and I say 94-98 the years of the 12v, they guy in the parts department says that there are different years. My question is, is that true? he said from 96-97 was a different sending unit. I've never heard there were different units. I paid $68 was that too much?

It could be that there are differences in the senders, you would have to look at the parts manual to tell for sure. $68 is in the ball park, maybe a little high.

 

There is a different part number for '94-'96 don't know what the difference in senders, if any, is though.

thanx for the info.Good to know I wasn't getting a story about the sensor.Did you suffer the same symptoms or did it just go completely?

 

I paid about $45 for my '96s at the local Dodge dealer. Don't know the part number or any difference. I just know that they go bad ALL the time.

 

I just bought one from the local dealer for my 97 for $35 but I also get a shop discount of about 10% or so. Was gonna install tonight but the hoist was being used so will dom tomorrow or Friday. Has anyone installed one in a dodge? I have dome them in Fords and Chevys but never in a dodge. Do you have to drop the tank all the way or are there any tricks to know? (sorry, didn't intendt to hijack but info both might need to know) Thanks.

 

I looked it up onece before and i think they said the best thing to do would be lifting one side of the bed up.

 

Much easier to tilt the bed than drop the tank. Just remove the fill and vent hoses, remove the three bed bolts on the driver's side loosen the three on the pass side and tilt it up. You only need about 18'' clearance.

 

I think the bed might be easier too the more I think about it even though I have a hoist to lift the truck. That tank is huge and would probably be difficult to man handle.

 

Besides not having to deal with a hard to balance tank what makes it easier is that you can disconnect the fuel lines and electrical where you can see them rather than in a limited space.
Come-a-long over a beam or even two people are enough to tilt the bed up. Just be sure to wedge a 2x4 in-between the frame and bed for safety, it would make one hell of a mouse trap

 

I don't see what all the fuss is about. I pulled the filler hose on my tank and siphoned all the fuel out. that made the job a snap. Tank down and back in an hour or so.

 

how hard is it to just take the whole bed off?
