The Fuel Guage Thing!!

Now i know 90% of the dodge trucks out there, the darn fuel guage does not work, mines been out for about 3years now. I'm going to be unbolting the bed to install a bodie lift, so i thought if might be a good time to take care of it. First off i know some trucks, the guage just die's, falls on E and does not move. But some are like mine and Bounce back and forth. I did a search on this and found that some of the sender units are $50 bucks, and the others a over $300. One post said it was from 97 and before that they were $300, After 97 they were around $50. I called and priced one for my 98, and they said it was $318. Can someone explane this to me, Thanks Chris

the sender for my truck was 45ish a fuel tank module is 320ish they may be trying to sell you the whole ball of wax. the bounceing sender could probably be solved by the spring/nut cure to keep the contacts touching

When the price is $300+ it's because a lazy parts guy is quoting you the price for the entire module not just the sender. Sender is usually $40-$50.

Buy reman for $125, or reman yourself for $2 and a stop at a hardware store. 20 extra minutes work and you save $123. Mine was intermittent before i fixed it. It didn't work 95% of the time, but once in a while it would jump up and surprise me.

Check prices yourself at: https://www.parts.com/partlocator/in...?siteid=213872

$44.75 dealer list for '98/'99 sending unit only.
$57.60 for '97 sender
$304.00 for '96 sending unit
All dealer list prices. The list prices on this site have always been correct...I use it all the time to check prices before heading to the dealer.

Not out to hijack, but what is the difference between '96 and '97 that the price is five times more. Can a '96 be upfitted to '97 or is it a whole different system?
Thanks

Something is wrong with that pricing.
I bought a sender only for a '95 for $42 last year, sort of doubt the '96 sender is it's own separate breed.

I tried a couple different dealers and the site i linked to, and nobody listed just a sender for a '95 or '96. I don't know where you got just the sender for a '95. The site shows the assembly only for '95 at $304.

The site I use for OEM parts http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...cfm?siteid=835 says
FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT, All Models, Diesel Engine -- $304.00
Includes Fuel Pump 1994-96.

This obviously isn't right. Like I said, I bought a sending unit for a '95 from the dealer for $42.
Don't trust everything you read on the internet.

When I changed mine I only changed the float unit. It was about $50 from the dealer. They wanted close to $400 for the whole unit. The easiest way to change it is to remove the bed and move it back out of your way so you have room over the tank. Or drain the tank and drop it. I spent well over a day trying to work with the bed tilted. When I thought I had enough room to get the module out I found the module was about 18 inches long. Kind of hard to remove with only a foot of clearance between the bed and tank. If I had completely removed the bed and set it back I would have been through in about 2 hours. Also the module brings out about a quart of fuel with it so you get a bath if you are not careful.

I did the sender on my 96 last year. P/N 4797738, cost me $80. (CDN).
