Ok guys, how many turn(s) does it take to tighten yall's fuel caps? When I'm finished fueling my truck up and tighten the cap, it only takes about 1/4 of a turn before the "click" to sound, if even that. It just doesn't seem like that gets it tight enough to keep stuff from getting in there. I will then turn it several more times to hear more clicks, but that seems to not make it any tighter. Is this normal, or should I replace the cap?

That's all I get out of mine, is a 1/4 turn.

If you look at how the cap is threaded and where it goes in the filler hole it looks like it fits. The cap is only there to keep the diesel in, crud out, and I think its even vented. A gas cap on a gasser vehicle is threaded to be non venting, for emissions.

 

I just stick mine on there. Don't turn it. Reason being is that whenever I used to tighten it, when I would take it off, I would hear air getting sucked into the tank. I didn't like that. It meant a vaccum inside the tank and that meant more work for the fuel pump. Not to mention, my gas gauge reacts a little quicker and I'm acutally getting a little better mileage.

 

BigBlue, On the top of the tank there is a fitting that serves as a vent. Only thing is there is a cap on the vent left there from the factory. A number of our trucks had the cap left on. I believe there is even a TSB out for it. All you have to do is run your hand on the top of the tank and feel around for it, and pull it off. That should fix your problem.

That takes to much time and effort. I'll leave the cap off and maybe one of these days, when the weather clears up and quits acting all goofy, I'll deal with the plug. But until then, I'll just leave my cap unscrewed.
