2nd gens have 32 spline axles. Don't worry, if your not locked in front and aren't running huge tires they'll be hard to break.

If you want to ugrade to 35 spline you'll need a locker with side gears to take 35 spline inners and the spindle will have to bored out to take a 35 spline outer. Then new hubs. While you're at it throw some CTM or Longfield u joints in them and forget about it. I've worked on old 60's but nothing as new as a 2nd gen so I don't know how to deal with the CAD if you have it. I don't know if can be by passed or what.

If you engage the CAD, it's no different than if you engage lock outs. Unstead of lockouts these axles use drive flanges so the axles turn all the time. It only matters if you put a locker in it.

Check out this article on the 35 spline upgrade:

I don't know how strong you want it to be but this might answer your question. Go to dynatrac.com they make larger axels, a long one piece axle for the right to eliminate the CAD, and Ford style locking hub kits that make the wheel bearings serviceable and stronger for larger tires. In total they can make the front axle very strong but it is not cheap.

Don't use CTM joints if its a street truck. They have awesome strength, but aren't designed for long term wear in a daily driver street vehicle.
