Fog Lights for a '97.....
Fog Lights for a '97.....
O.K., so I searched the fourms, and found some information, but far from a complete picture........
I ordered a fog light kit for my truck from Dodgeparts.com. The kit that they sent me was pn: 8220-5656. When the kit arrived, everything was there for the install. 3" fog lights, new sight shields, wiring harness, relays, new light switch, all the necessary fastners, and a complete set of instructions.
Everything was looking good.........until I took a more DETAILED look.
Upon closer inspection I began to realize that this kit is NOT for the 1994-1997 model trucks, but for the 1998-2001, as the replacement light switch was of the newer design.
After some research, I discovered that there was another kit, pn: 8220-2452 (now discontinued), that apparently was for the 1994-1997 Trucks, but specifically states that it will not work on CTD equipped trucks. This is because of the location of the Transmission Cooler behind the drivers side sight shield.
I have since learned that many of the 1994-1997 SLT packaged trucks were prewired for fog lights. Hoping this was the case, I headed to the local dealership and ordered up a Fog-Light Switch. After I got the switch, I installed it into the dash, and sure enough, behind the panel with the OD lockout switch, there was a connector that plugged directly into the fog light switch. Whooooopie!!!!
I headed under the truck, and behind the radiator, I discovered 2 unused connectors. I assumed that these are for the fog lights, but when I put the old volt meter to them, I discovered that the one on the passengers side (2 wire connector) had 12 volts across it, and the one on the drivers side (3 wire connector) has nothing. Operating the headlight switch, and new fog light switch had no effect on either connector.
Lots of questions now:
1. Are the connectord behind the radiator for the Fog Lights?
2. If so, anybody have a wiring diagram?
3. If so, where can I get the correct mating connectors?
4. Do I need to install additional relays in the system, or were they included in the SLT packaged trucks?
5. I understand that the lights are made for Dodge by the company that makes Hella lights, and that an almost identical light (only brighter) is available straight from Hella. Can I get pigtails that go from the Hella lights to the connectors behind the radiator?
6. The factory parts catalog for the 1997 Ram lists pn: 5601-9993 WIRING, Jumper (H.Lamp & Dash to Fog Lamp). It states that 2ea. are required. Anybody know what these are, and do I need them (they are kind of $$$$).
7. The factory parts catalog also lists pn: 4687-483 Relay, Fog lamp. Do I need to order a couple of these?
Any advice as to how I can get Fog lights for my '97 will be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks!!!

You did better than I did trying to use the factory wiring. I wasted my time almost a full day hunting down the wiring before I gave up and just used my own new wiring. Only took about an hour to have my fog lights running then.
I never found the connector behind the factory switch location and wonder if you really did also. The OD off switch uses the same type connector as the factory fogs. Not sure if '97 was the year OD off was moved to the end of the shifter, perhaps the old connector was left in place and you found it.
I ended up wiring up the factory switch I purchased to the positive, ground and light dimmer wires to the OD off switch then ran a small switched positive wire from the switch to the area of the driver's side battery. Mounted a $10 autoparts relay to the side of the battery box. Ran a heavy wire with inline fuse from the battery positive to the switched terminal of the relay, the small wire from the switch went to the relay trigger. All that was left was a ground to the relay and heavier wire to the fog lights themselves. Used a ground to the lights right off the frame where they were mounted.

My '97 has the DASH MOUNTED OD lockout. At first, I went in through the cup holder with my hand, and didn't find the wires. However, i kept fishing my hand in there, and there was a set off wires running down between the radio, and the heater controls. I tugged on them a little, and they appeared not to be connected to anything (or I tugged them loose). I then removed the "Knee" pannel, and took a look. I immediately recognized the end of the connector as the one for the fog light switch. It took some wiggling, as the connecter was hung up, but eventually I sas able to get it to come up to where it belonged, and sure enough it plugged right in to the factory fog light switch. So, step 1 is completed.
What did you use for Fog Lights?
Did you modify the sight shields in the bumper?
The "fog light capable" sight shields are available for around $25 ea.
I want to return the 1998-2001 kit, unless................

I used projector style fog lights similar to these http://www.jcwhitney.com/webapp/wcs/...0101&langId=-1
I hole-sawed a pair of holes in the lower bumper skirt so the lenses just peak out. Used some existing threaded holes in the lower radiator support to attach the mounting brackets.
I chose these lamps because the lens is over an inch thick and very unlikely to break. Mounting the lamps as low as possible results in the best lighting but also makes them susceptible to breakage.
Look cool and light the road excellent. I'll try and get some photos.
If I were you I'd just cut the connector off that you found and use it to do your own wiring. My only conclusion after hours searching under the dash is that some of the wiring, namely the connectors for relays, is missing unless your rig came with factory fogs.
