Fixed the brakes, Maybe!!
I posted a question about my 4x4 eating front brakes and got a lot of replies. So, I pulled the rears drums and those shoes looked like new. Both slack adjusters were frozen. Took it all apart, cleaned ,lubed, reinstalled and drained all the fluid, refilled and bled. So, while i was at it, I pulled the front calipers, put in some ceramic pads, flushed out the calipers, drained and flushed the front system as well. Haven't got it bled out yet. Spent to day Killing the KDP on the other truck. I'll finish this one on Sunday.

Thanks for all the tips you guys. ;D ;D

Gary

Mine do the same thing. Have since new. Tried everything I can think of. Replaced all hardware. Tried hi-temp grease, teflon grease, silicon, dry-lube, anti-seize... Adjusters still stick, usually one side. Best way to keep slack adjusted out I found so far is to hit the park brake while rolling fwd (slowly), just before stopping. The "apply brakes in reverse to a complete stop" as the service manual says doesn't work on the big Dana's IMO, maybe on a car...
-Scott A

Shire,
So far, knock on wood, it has been working for me. When I think about it, in a parking lot, I just back up and hit the brakes several times. You gotta make sure you drag the front tires though.
I feel it in my pedal afterwards.

Chris

Hey Shire,

Welcome aboard, your gonna love this site. A ton of good info is exchanged. I'm glad, in a way, to hear that your truck does the same as mine. So far, after repairing the rear adjusters, adjusting them up, putting new pads, again, on the front and also flushing all the old fluid. I see no difference. Truck stops exactly as it did before. Which is **** good ;D. Always did. Just eats front pads :-[. Sometimes I only get 10K out of them. But, I have not tried what Stamey recommends, back up kinda fast and lock the fronts and this will adjust the backs. I'll try that

Mymaur, I finally changed out my front pads on my 94 4x2 at 62,000 miles cause I got tired of pulling the front tire off to see if the pads were worn enough to install new pads. MY back shoes looked good and I'd guess they have worn about 30 percent.

Glad to be back anyway.

I can get my shoes to adjust IF they aren't too much out, by punching the parking brake hard, just before stopping (in a parking lot), then reverse slightly and tap the service brake. Problem is, usually one adjuster will stick, or not 'click' same as other side - so end up with pull to one side. End up dragging the jack out every 6 weeks or so to adjust manually. Just replaced the drums and rotors. Last time I buy drums from NAPA or Brembo (oem) rotors... (inferior recycled import steel, though the tell you it isn't). Giving up on the rear brakes until I can find a suitable rear disc setup (& $$$ for it).
Kinda' hard to slide the front tires on my rig. Those 33x12.5x16.5 mudgrips don't give much...
Good luck!
Scott
