Exhaust Tips

I am considering putting a 4x7x18 or 4x8x18 tip, should I cut the end of the tail pipe off or slip on over it? Will slipping over the existing one still give me a nice sound?

I had to extend my tailpipes on my dually...Otherwise they stuck in to far under the truck..I have alot of extra pipe inside my tips..I never tryed extended them the full length to see if the sound changes..

When I decided to leave the tip on, I cut about 2.5 inches off the tail pipe or it would have stuck out the end of the tip.

The tip stuck out way too far in my opinion.

The sound didn't change as far as I can tell.

When I did my tips I cut the exhaust back and just had a quarter inch or so sticking into the tips. I'm not sure if it sounded different or not but figured 3 inches of stock pipe sticking out into my tip would like like some sort of hack job......or laziness.
