Hello everyone, please bear with me this is my first post. I read that a 24v resonator is to quiet down and reduce droan. If that is true would a gutted cat and no muff be quiter than just a strait pipe? Thank-you for any input.

Reason is, I dont want insain noise (hopping for the sleeper effect), and I want the cat anyway because I plan on some canada trips and herd that they sometimes check your truck for converters.

 

I would say YES.

I ran my 24v factory 3.5 straight piped for about a week (I haul heavy) and the noise was just too "sharp", and loud. Had a bad drone at about 2100 rpm too.

Put the resonator back on, and it took the sharpness out, mellowed it down, and shifted the drone to higher up- 2600 rpm, which I don't run at too often in high gear.

NOW, I've got a 4" system with Magnaflow muffler only, that I like best!

Go for it, and try it!

 

Don't want do annoy anyone, but are their any other opinions on this?

I agree with roadranger. A free flowing muffler, or the stock resonator, will take the "bite" out of the exhaust note but leave plenty of "bark".

I have to admit, I love the sound of a straight pipe, but it is just too much for me on my daily driver.

 

I removed the stock muffler and put in a straight piece of pipe, leaving the small resonator in place, it has a nice tailpipe note and very little drone. Highly recommended.

 

you guys that leave the resonators on. do you go with 4 inch from there or reduce it?

 

The muffler has a 4" inlet and a 3" outlet, and a 3" tailpipe over the rear axle, since I wasn't changing the whole tailpipe, I just put in a 3" pipe, stretching the forward end up to 4" to fit inside the resonator. If you keep the stock tailpipe, I don't think there would be a reason to go 4" and then reduce to mate with the tailpipe.
