Engine stops after start

Engine stops after start
No emergency, just trying to help my grandson.
If the key is turned to start, the engine
will start but the starter keeps running. If the key is turned back
to run, the engine stops. I suspect the switch on top of the steering
column, under the dash. Any ideas welcome, and thanks for any
assistance given.
