not sure about you, but my insurance covers against theft, vandalism, etc. but, I'd rather have my truck messed up and still get to KEEP it and be reimbursed for any damages than have somebody get to drive it away undamaged
I don't know what's the right answer here. I feel same as you, don't misunderstand me, but unfortunately reality is way different. I think we have to act accordingly to the situation. I leave all my vehicles open with keys in at my house (I live in the country), but I lock it when I go to town.

I witnessed stealing a Porsche with car alarm right in front of me, it took little over 30 seconds, by the time I dialed 911 and got the operator, car tires were still smooking running away, it blew my mind.

The issue here is leaving truck in the woods for days.....99% of this will end with no problem, but the 1% possibility of damage is a factor.

How about using another beater truck, or have somebody else drive yours to pick you up ?

I've always wanted a car alarm that is attached to a big tank of some gas that isn't air/oxygen.... N2, tear gas, NOX, whatever.

Basically, when the person breaks in, it would displace all the oxygen from the truck, and so prevent any thief from breathing.

Get a users guide for LOJACK and leave it so they can see just a little of it..

If they do take it they will park it for a week or so to make sure the cops don't find their chop shop..

RUGER super redhawk!!
You can put a kill switch in the clutch switch. Flip anytime you think it is vulnerable.

on a serious note, I have a GPS alarm on my truck w/ cell phone notification. if somebody REALLY wants your vehicle, they WILL get it unless you sit inside it 24/7

the key is to make it harder on them

Under the hood, in the fuse panel, engine fuse. Should be blue or green, can't remember off the top of my head.

It ain't like it used to be when you could park it in the woods and not worry about it. Some people never change. Its a risk you have to decide to take. Don't leave anything valuable in it. maybe carry extra fuel and run it pretty low to your destination then stash 10 or 15 gallons somewhere nearby. At least they wouldn't get too far.

you could install an gadget they use to sell called a pain generator

it is part of an alarm system, that when triggered, gives off the sound of fingernails on a chalkboard at ~ 150 db....inside the truck.

Or install electric dual air horns in the seat, and have it wired to go off and stay on when the theif tries to crank the engine without the air horn kill switch turned off.

I've always thought of doing this when my 86 GMC truck was vandalized, and driven in a ditch when the *&^% couldn't steer the locked steering wheel.

Keep it hidden, when I go hiking, hunting, or anything that leaves my car vulnerable in the woods, I make sure to hide it so its not visible. I just make the general assumption that no one else is going in the same area that I am.

Consequently, I have nearly lost my jeep in the woods doing this, it blends in real well in the fall when parked in the middle of a forest.

Everything mentioned here seems like a good idea, one thing that could be real fun is to install a bank of Farad capacitors, let them complete the circuit when they start to fiddle with something

you should be able to keep an eye on your truck from wherever you are camped with one of these:
