dumb question but hey i am new to diesels

my question is how do i drain the water out of the filter.....

i read the tech faq's and it says to do it on or about every fill up...and to do it when the truck is off...as the water will settle to the bottom...but it doesnt say how to do it...

as i look at the filter, i see a yellow/black plastic lever that is attached to some sort of tube heading down...when i purchased the truck the previous owner said this lever is the one you turn to seperate the filter housing when changing the fuel filter and said to MAKE SURE YOU TURN IT BACK when you are done....

is this the lever i turn to drain????

thanks

That's for your previous owner.
Yes the Yellow lever is for draining the water out of the housing. Just turn it and let the water drain out if there is any there.
It is not there to take the filter out. You need to take the nut loose on top, disconnect the electric wires and the canister will come right out.

U just lift up the lever and the water (if any) will drain out the tube. When u replace the filter, thats when u unscrew the water sensor and tranfer it to the new filter.

hey thanks guys....i guess i misrepresented the previous owner...he probally said that and i didnt type it right....i do remember him saying to unscrew the nut on top of the filter and then something about the canister and that yellow lever....

hey...all i can say is he was nothing but honest with me....never said something about the vehicle that wasnt true...he told me about the two minor dings. he told me and gave me recipts for fuel filter changes, oil, and the one tranny drain and refill, he told me he hadnt done the valves, he told me he has never had an issue with the LP so it is stock...120k...(and it cycles for ALL 25 sec when bumped) and he also told me about how these things CHEW BRAKES lol...

it is rare to come across someone willing to give you the WHOLE run down about the vehicle they are selling especially when i am over 400 miles away from him and he knew that i would be purchasing a 1 way ticket, so he could have screwed me and made it out to be great and it was a hunk of junk...(pics do hide a lot, so you cant go by them only)

but like i said on an earlier thread with out you all here at DTR i would have been even less informed about my first purchase than i was when i flew down to get it...with your help i felt confident when i went to get it....and true to his word it WAS A VERY NICE 1 OWNER truck....that i got at a steel.

thanks

NCA...Jake

ps is there any reason i WOULD NOT drain it at each fill up.

It's your truck do it if you want. Personally I drain mine only while changing filters. I've never seen water come out of mine when I first bought it and was told to drain it every other tank. I did that for a few tanks but never any water. Oh ya, fill up on fuel, drive home and park it for the night. Before starting in the AM that is the best time to drain as the water, if any, really has time to settle to the bottom. Try it for a few tanks but if you get water in your tank/filter bowl it's time to find a better station to buy from.

my .02

Good luck.

I've changed fuel filters on mine over 250 times. Every once in awhile I'll drain it into a clear jar instead of my oil drain pan. I have yet to get any water. I have never drained it any other time. Isn't that fuel abuse?

Does that mean you change filters every 2000 miles?

I went roughly 20k km without draining the water seperator on my FASS, and nothing by diesel came out. Same with my factory fuel filter. Never have had any water come out.

Dammit, no embarassed smiley. No, I change them every 15 to 20k miles. That's what I get for drinking beer while operating a hand calculator, didn't see the decimal. The rest of the post is accurate tho.

ok..so funny stuff....

this being my first time "Draining the filter of water" i had know idea what to expect.

well after work i went out to the truck poped the hood and went after that little yellow handle....well i give it a good turn towards the passengerside....and pause.....nothing then it starts to drip....and then it starts to POOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRR out....well it looked clear like water and i say to myself....."didnt someone say" "if there is any water at all....."

well i notice that it is now back to a drip after maybe 3-4 seconds of a good solid straight stream.....and so i close the yellow lever and hop in the cab...wait to start goes out and give here a crank....she fires up and then DIES on me....OHHHH NOOOOO...so i will be truthful i kinda paniced and didnt know what was up....

so i tell myself "think about what just happened" you drained the fuel filter of water, right....ok maybe there was a little diesel in that "water" you drained out...or maybe there was a little water in that "diesel" you drained out.....

edited by admin i just purged the fuel filter of all its diesel.....now what...so i remember everyone saying to bump the starter and get that LP running to fill the lines and filters again....so i begin....after 2 bumps and 2 cranks (aprox. 15 sec. on the cranks) she fired up...sputterd and then went into that nice IDLE we all like to hear.

well i must say that was an experience...i am just glad she started up again...and i am supprised to see how soon....after reading about this sort of thing it seems that most people have to bump the lp 3-4 sometines 5 times and crank for 30 seconds before they prime the system....

anyways....thanks for the help and i guess LEARNING FROM YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES is the best way to do it...
