I know it's hard to describe/diagnose sounds on this board but here we go....


When my truck is moving (no weird sound while stationary) I hear a chirping noise from the front end (possibly left front tire) that sounds like a cricket chirping! It is not a clicking noise nor does it seems to reflect RPM of the tire. It sounds like something is loose and vibrating (metal vs. metal). It almost sounds like a squeaky matress!

Any thoughts? (p.s.....no jokes please!!)

I had a similar sound on my truck. It would squeak,rattle,clatter, and I couldn't tell where it was coming from. One time it sounded like it was in the back seat area, then under the dash, the from the front. I decided I would put the truck in nuetral while coasting then shut the engine off. The sound went away as soon as I put it in nuetral. I found out it was the shifting linkage. I put grease on the linkage joints under the truck and it fixed the noise. It was driving me nuts! You might give it a try. Good luck!

 

I had the same issue with my 2001.5 last year. At first I thought it was a wheel bearing on the left side, then heard it under the dash. I finally did a little search on the DTR and found that it is caused by the metal to metal contact of the automatic shifter linkage joint under the truck. The squeak went away as soon as I put pressure on the shifter with my hand or if I placed it into neutral. This linkage is located in front of the toeboard on the drivers side. Like kyncl, I applied grease to the linkage and fixed that quickly. It was driving me nuts.

 

I tracked down a cricket in one that you could swear was coming from the front end but ended up being the VIN tag on top of the dash at the base of the windshield.
A folded piece of paper under it was all it took to silence it.

My chirping noise is the front sway bar joints....they are worn out.

 

This is probably not your "cricket", but my cricket came from the passenger side seat belt receiver (buckle). Without notice, the parts started rattling in there when no one was using the belt clipped together. Took me a few days to figure it out. Some crickets are easier to chase down than others......

 

Hey..thanks so much for the feedback! Got home tonight and sprayed some WD-40 to test the linkage for crickets. Will reply tomorrow and follow-up if that was the problem and will apply real grease to the fix.

Now, what I am really shocked about is what I have not noticed for 7 years probably because it was covered in mud....

ARE THESE THE T.C.U. WIRES EXPOSED UNDER THE UNDER CARRIAGE??? WHAT WAC DC THINKING?

 

i have had two that took me forever to find on was the jack under the plastic of the back seat. the other was the bed sides moving back and forth it was rubbing on the tailgate latch studs that was the longest one to find

 

I finally found the shift linkage issue after fighting that squeek for several months. It's like a whole new truck now, just wish I would have known this was such a well known issue! Oh well, at least it's nice and quiet now!

I had the same chirping from the front of my truck. Drove me nuts for about a month. Turns out it was the hood latch. I found it while washing my truck and was pressing down on the hood and it made a chirping sound. The latch was extremely dry. I sprayed some lithium greese all over the latch and now the squeek is gone. Not sure if that's your issue but just throwing it out there.

WD-40 on shifter linkage solved problem. Will probably spray lithium on all linkages under hood and carriage.

AND..put some wire loom over those exposed wires!

ha! as i'm reading this post i can see guys driving down the road, hear a noise, then totally ignore the fact that they r driving and basically put their ear to the dash, door, steering wheel, etc. to figure out where the noise is coming from.

 

I don't care where I put my ear, I can't hear any crickets over the cummins in the '01!!
